With Google Domains being sold to SquareSpace, I'm curious if people in the #fediverse have a strong recommendation for an alternate registrar to transfer a domain to?
From the FWIW Dept:
"#Squarespace recently announced that it entered into an agreement to purchase all domain name registrations and related customer accounts from #GoogleDomains."
Nice reminder if you are using #googledomains to start transferring your domains out to other platforms, I would use #cloudflare since it is pretty easy to transfer.
Sunset of #googledomains not yet begin but there are already options highlighted. To be honest #cloudflare is one of decent alternatives if your domain extension is supported.
So with Google Domains being hawked to Squarespace, and me trying to extricate myself from giant corporations, who's got recommendations for a domain registrar that's not shady and actively making the world a worse place?
Right now I'm looking at Dynadot and Infomaniak but I don't really know anything about them.
With #googledomains being the latest product killed by Google, is anyone else trying to transfer their .dev domain out? #aws R53 doesn’t support the dev tld, and #cloudflare says it’s “coming soon” with no ETA… Any/all advice is welcome
Google is shutting down #GoogleDomains -- "selling" the 10 million domains it manages for its customers (inc all Google Workspace users) to Squarespace. Seriously dents any trust we can place in Google to provide robust business services. Bad day. https://9to5google.com/2023/06/15/google-domains-squarespace/
One useful side effect of the Google Domains fiasco is that we're all discovering very useful alternative domain hosting companies with comparable if not better deals. 🔥 #googledomains
I've seen good deals from Hover and Dynadot. Add yours to the list.
It should now be standard practice to have a killed by Google contingency plan if you're still enthusiastic enough about using Google products for anything beyond basic workspaces. Just saying. #googledomains
