Please boost! The Nevada City Rancheria #Nisenan Tribe has a time-limited opportunity to purchase a land parcel encompassing 232 acres (roughly one square kilometer) located on a historic Nisenan Village site called Yulića near Nevada City in Northern California.
(So yes, they're trying to buy back land stolen from them.)
This is the Tribe’s best opportunity to re-establish a homeland in more than half a century and everyone’s help is needed. $2.4 million includes land, govt-mandated improvements, & operating endowment.
Phase 1 fundraising: $1.5 million by April 4, 2024.
#HouseRepublicans voted Tues to advance an impeachment case against #DHS Secy #AlejandroMayorkas to the full chamber, moving one step closer to impeaching the first Cabinet member in almost 150 yrs.
In a vote along party lines after a marathon meeting, members of the #House#Homeland#Security Cmte advanced 2 articles of #impeachment against #Mayorkas, accusing him of “willful & systemic refusal to comply w/the #law” & breach of the public trust. The move came even as Dems repeatedly asserted during the hearing that #Republicans have no constitutional basis to impeach Mayorkas, ¬ed #GOP lawmakers have struggled in 2 recent hearings to detail clear #evidence of high crimes & misdemeanors.
In a 6pg letter sent Tues to #Homeland#Security Cmte chairman Rep Mark Green, Mayorkas detailed his lengthy career & pushed back on the #GOP’s accusations that he has avoided their oversight….
“We have provided #Congress & your Cmte hrs of testimony, thousands of docs, hundreds of briefings, & much more info that demonstrates quite clearly how we are enforcing the #law.”
“Political & policy disagreements aren’t impeachable offenses. The #Constitution gives #Congress the power to impeach federal ofcls for treason, bribery & ‘other high Crimes & Misdemeanors.’ That’s a high bar. In the history of our republic, only one cabinet secretary has been impeached….”
“As #homeland#security secretary under President George W. Bush —& as a fmr federal judge, U.S. atty & asst atty general — I can say w/ confidence that, for all the investigating that the #House Cmte on Homeland Security has done, they have failed to put forth #evidence that meets the bar.
“This is why #Republicans aren’t seeking to hold #Mayorkas to the #Constitution’s ‘high crimes & misdemeanors’ standard for impeachment. They make the unsupported argument that he is derelict in his duty.”
My fellow #Canadians, I am currently considering the viability of #moving back to the #homeland after having lived over 20 years in a foreign country.
Unfortunately, it kinda looks like #Canada has turned a bit "rough", shall we say, in the time I have been gone.
In your professional opinions, where is the best place to move to in Canada as a single, no-dependents person essentially making a fresh start?
While I stopped being a young adult around the time I purchased glasses in order to be able to see small things up close, I am the perfect audience member for @pluralistic's brilliant "Little Brother".
Half "Nineteen Eight-Four", half introduction to privacy and cryptography, half hacker manifesto, half teen romance, half historical account, one quarter nostalgia hit and five quarters thrilling adventure well read by Kirby Heyborne.
Speaking as an industry expert on screen adaptations having watched quite a few, the pace, cadence and balance of character and action felt like I was binging a show like "Jack Ryan" - with as much punishment of our protagonist but without any of the overt plot armour in unnecessarily escalating peril.
The news from 2015 is exciting, understanding how long it can take to make these things. https://craphound.com/homeland/2015/09/08/little-brother-optioned-by-paramount/
After celebrating Miss Muttonchop's excellent A level results (despite exam boards and England's Government being mean to Covid kids) spent the book token that's been at the back of my wallet since my birthday.
So went to a bookshop and bought a @pluralistic book (he even signed it when Cory visited Nottingham and I missed him).
Good first day of my holiday.
