#Watching THE CROSSING GUARD

Jack Nicholson holds the screen well enough in Sean Penn's debut as a writer director.
It's a piece of depression porn that contains all the self indulgent beats and hokey dialogue you might expect from a first timer (so much introspection!).

Somebody - I’ve never really got on with Miranda July’s films but this short for the Miu Miu Women’s Series is fun and enjoyable. Maybe I’ll give her features a go again. Any recommendations?

House of Tolerance - I started this months ago and got sidetracked but watched it again when it popped up on MUBI. Adele Haenel stars in this look at the lives of women in a French brothel from their point of view. It looks great, yes, but is full of searing rage and despair. In the US it was called House of Pleasure, when, mostly for the women in the film, their indentured lives are full of anything but pleasure.

Almost Entirely a Slight Disaster - A dry, droll Turkish film about your young people in the country, all of whom we see crying alone, as they face hardships. It’s funny, though; think Roy Andersson or Ali Kaurismäki.

Challengers - The trailer made me think I’d hate this film but I read lots of reviews praising it, and went in open-minded and hopeful. First off, Zendaya is good. But the characters are inanely one-dimensional, it jumps around all over the place, Trent Reznor’s techno drowns out the dialogue, and the ‘shock’ ending is telegraphed miles out. And worst of all it’s just boring. The first hour would have been a spinning-newspaper headline in a 1930s film. And it’s got tennis in it. Ha, to make the tennis interesting Guadagnino uses every cliché, making it look like the camera’s in the ball, sticking a GoPro on the racquet, and those scenes end up being laughable. TL:DR I didn’t like it.

LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL

The worst part of Late Night with the Devil happens during the overly long and overly revealing prologue. You're force fed all you need to know and can glean almost every twist. It should have cut it by half and lost none of its power.
Aside from that exposition explosion, Late Night is a solid slow burn and period purists will shoot their polyester suit over all the 70s details.

#Watching BLAIR WITCH

There are some effective moments, but there are too many instances of stupid characters doing stupid things in a horror movie.

MIGRATION

Adequate family entertainment that highlights the danger of stepping out of your comfort zone.
I feel kinda bad watching a about animated ducks that I'm hungry for real ducks but I'm sure the feeling will pass.
Lessons will be learned. Stars will make money doing voices in studios wearing their pajamas or nothing at all (Eg. Tom Hanks in those Toy Story movies).

SUSHI GIRL

Uneven but entertainingly lurid crime movie that fulfills the Luke Skywalker/Candyman team up you spent years wishing for.
Decent performances cover up a derivative story. Gratuitous gore and nudity also cover up most of its flaws.
Nothing special but you never feel your time is wasted.
Watch even if you're allergic to seafood.

HUBIE HALLOWEEN

Had lowered expectations and they were met. Wasn't expecting much. Didn't get much.
Typical Sandler with the added bonus of cameos from the ASEU (Adam Sandler extended Universe).
Sandler must have a lot of friends that owe him favors or need money.
This is what we get for not nominating him for Uncut Gems

ALEX & EMMA

Rob Reiner's limp wastes Kate Hudson and Luke Wilson as they generate no sparks.
Takes so long for the story to begin, but there's no actual humor to keep the scenes afloat and your attention from wavering.
At least it's not as bad as North. Makes you want to read a book which isn't a bad thing in itself if it gets you to avoid this.

FULLTIME KILLER

Generically fun hitman that does nothing to advance the genre but is a sufficient enough diversion from your parents telling you that you're adopted even though you're white and your adopted parents are black and Asian.
You see most of what's coming but the capably directed action sequences keep you from boredom.
If you're a part time killer it may not make you want to go fulltime.

NEXT

Sci-fi "Thriller" with cheap special effects show you that the filmmakers gave up spending money because they knew what garbage they had on their hands.
Feel bad for Julianne Moore. I asked her why she did this movie and she just started crying.
"Next" is the method by which Nic Cage says "yes" to
The 1 star is just because I feel sorry for it.
Instead of Next, just say No-xt.

Name an obscure film that you love but have never heard anybody else talk about or admit to seeing?

I'll go first... A PURE FORMALITY (1994)

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL

Some of the best set pieces in the Mi franchise. That Mumbai skyscraper climb is one of the best silent action scenes since the one in Mute Man Climbs The Building.
Tom Cruise only screamed profanities at the underage children working on the film because they would faint from exhaustion after only working 15 hours a day.

George, George Glas---

Rose, Rose...Glass?

By far my favorite sapph-centric crime thriller with a singular O in its title I've seen today.
Past winners include-

Drive Away DOlls

MulhOlland Drive (genre-less, but we're keeping on theme)

BOund

Dave Franco's mullet played by another random Franco brother, as were Ed Harris' extensions.

#Watching MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING

A sitcom that made it to theaters and broke box office records. The jokes are pedestrian, the characters are cloying, the laughs are plastic.
It is your Aunt's favorite #movie so there's that.
Has a boy band member from the 90s, so there's that.
Skip this wedding. Unless you like your audience like you like your mayo. Super white.

American Star – Ian McShane is a hitman in Gran Canaria who becomes enamoured by the locals in this ponderous film. Not essential but he’s very good.

Pig – I loved this. I'm not a huge Cage fan but this is undoubtedly his best performance. He's still and exudes steely determination in this revenge thriller that plays with the very notion of what revenge is. It completely upended me.

Red Desert – Antonioni's first colour film stars Monica Vitti as a woman on the verge of of a nervous breakdown. Visually stunning, and she is mesmerisingly raw in this.

Perfect Days – Everyone seems to love this languid film of a Tokyo toilet cleaner, but it’s flabby, at times silly, unfocused, and needs a lot of editing. I can see why people loved it but I found it drumroll bog standard.
