Just received a sample sheet from a Canadian artist paint manufacturer, Kroma.

Amazing how, after all these years, I still get excited about beautiful pigments!

Mmm:
▪ ultramarine violet
▪ cobalt teal
▪ quinacridone red
▪ nickel azo yellow
▪ cadmium chartreuse! …

The shipping is cruel, tho.
If you're in BC, check it out, on Granville Is.!

Happy birthday to Russian & writer Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevski (1850-1891). Her contributions to analysis, differential equations & mechanics include Cauchy-Kovalevski theorem & the famed Kovalevski top. She was 1st woman appointed to full prof in N Europe or to serve as editor of a major sci journal. She is also remembered for her contributions to Russian literature. 🧵1/n

An old print today. This is Tin Mine from 2018, a three colour screenprint.

It's inspired by Cornwall (where are all the Cornish people on Mastodon?) and is quite abstract.

Here's a print I made in 2020 called Sea Holly House. It is a three colour screenprint.

This was made when I was doing lots of "constructions" of objects, trying to make them look like art installations. I balanced stuff and tied stuff together in my prints. Didn't print a lot of these constructions though but I did sketch a lot.

The first stuff I screen printed was onto linen (yes I don't know why I made things extra hard for myself). We made lampshades, cushions and tea towels.

And the first "range" I made (because I thought I had to make ranges) was called Cover Story. It was a design featuring trees, blowing leaves and a badger.

Here's a lampshade I printed in three colours as part of the Cover Story range.

This was my very first screenprint which I offered for sale. (I did do a gig poster before this but it was pretty much a printing disaster).

I made this 7 almost exactly years ago.

This is called Teasel and Hare. I used a technique I called "digital linocut" but it was not great. It is not my best work but shows a point in time where I was starting out. It was an edition of 22.

This print is called Along the Coastal Path and is a five colour print.

It is not of a specific place but is from my imagination. In this print I really started to combine stylised elements with textures.

Here's another print I am really happy with; Porthgwarra Rocks.

It is a real place in South Cornwall near Land's End.

I used illustration and halftones to achieve this print and I have not done another one like it though I would very much like to.

Close up of my Majestic Fox print. Screen printed in four colours; cyan, orange, red and dark blue.

I made this as part of a series of Majestic Animals which were supposed to look like travel posters for animals.

Here's a print called Boscastle Harbour which I made almost a year ago! It is a five colour screenprint.

I painted ink on paper for the brush strokes and photographed it, putting it into the screenprint.

Instead of working on these new animal prints which was my next task, I have picked up an exciting commission.

I will be very busy over the next couple of months and it's pretty exciting. I will also end up with a bunch of new prints.

Hopefully I can still work the new animal prints into my time and get them printed by the time of my first fair.

So here's that print in full, The Harbour Crane. An attempt to draw more people!

I think I should do a print where people are the main element, what do you think?

JohnBloor, to liveaboard

Here's my Boatyard print from last year.

It's a four colour screenprint which uses transparent black to create extra tones.

I wanted to draw more people and this is one of the first prints where I've deliberately put people in.

So I've already shown you a print of Mevagissey, here's an older print of Mevagissey showing a section of the harbour and houses.

I made this print in 2018. It's a single colour linocut and was made quite early in my printmaking career. An edition of 50, it is A4 in size.

Here's another one of my recent prints, Mevagissey Harbour, a six colour screenprint which I started editioning earlier this year.

It is from a series of photographs I took of the harbour. I did not trace it from the photograph though but redrew it and interpreted it in my own way.

It features four colours and two transparent blacks. And lots of textures and natural media elements.

It is quite large at 48 x 38cm.

This is my latest print, Rooftops of St Ives, a seven colour screenprint.

It features three colours plus two transparent blacks and two whites to give the print more dynamics and more tones.

It is a hard print to hand print with each layer having its own particular things to be careful of when printing.

Yes I know herons don't nest on rooftops!
