I hate that Google’s AI is named Gemini. Now when I tell people that I explore geminispace they think AI rather than smolnet. To be fair, no one really thought smolnet anyway.

pollux.casa account registration is reopened!

If you need a dual protocol gemini/https hosting, I propose a free solution on a personal server. You will get 1GB storage to put #gemtext and images files and build a #gemini capsule also accessible through https.
More info on https://pollux.casa/ or gemini://pollux.casa/
A smart autoindex generate an index of your posts if no index.gmi is found in a directory 😉 easier for a gemlog, read the doc to name files

If you look at an HTML document that has absolutely no styling in a web-browser (such as Chrome or Firefox) it does not look good for many HTML tags.

If you look at an HTML document that has absolutely no styling in many eBook readers (that support EPUB) they look decent.

It would probably be better for a small-net web-browser to be more like an eBook reader than the major modern web-browsers.

Hello fediverse,
because it's common in this space, this is a little #introduction

I'm completely new to all this Social Media stuff and I was very skeptical about it in the past. Due to the evil nature of their corporations, I avoid Facebook and Twitter like the plague. But because ActivityPub is a free protocol and not bound to corporate interests it seems interesting. I'm not sure if I'll like it or post frequently - I'm just trying it out.

I'm an enthusiastic computer, GNU/Linux and *BSD hobbyist. I like to tinker around with hard- and software in my little homelab. I'm in no way a professional or expert of any kind in the IT field. Just doing things for fun.

Also interested in Gemini and the smolnet/indieweb. The way the internet is heading these days isn't very promising. When I discovered the gemini protocol in 2021 I was imediately intrigued. So I set up my own little capsule which I now regard as my private home in the online world (link in profile).

I hope we have a good time together!

This is one of the things that attracts some people to the gemini-protocol and gemtext.

I.e., that gemini is close to being a world-wide-web based on markdown rather than HTML.

...

Having talked to many of these people —

Some are fully happy with gemini and gemtext.

Some are unsatisfied with gemtext's lack of (what they feel are) key features that markdown has.

One reason that HTTP(S) came to dominate application development is —

A lot of firewalls block all Internet traffic that isn't HTTP(S) — i.e., that isn't sent over TCP port 80 or 443.

That presents a problem for small-net protocols.

Will they in practice "work" for most people — will they be accessible by most people — given so many firewalls block non-HTTP(S) traffic‽

Should small-net protocol developers even care‽

I recently became aware of a new small-net protocol (thanks to @wholesomedonut ) —

Misfin
gemini://misfin.org/
https://sr.ht/~lem/misfin/

Where the gemini-protocol is an alternative to the gopher-protocol and the Web — Misfin is an alternative to e-mail.

Misfin is tied to the gemini-protocol & gemtext — messages are assumed to be gemtext, server responses are based on gemini-protocol server responses, etc.

There is a type of person who is attracted to the gemini-protocol and gemtext because they wanted a Web that was based on Markdown instead of HTML.

And the gemini-protocol + gemtext seemed close to that.

...

Not everyone who is attracted to gemini-protocol or gemtext is this type of person.

But I've talked to enough of these types of people that I know they are definitely out there.

🚨 Attention Gemini, Gopher, & Finger fans —

Adële ( @adele ) has something to show you:

https://smolweb.org/

Adële joins others who argue that — we shouldn't throw out all of the HTML "baby" with the broken-web "bath water" — but that instead —

We should use a restricted subset of HTML — and in particular XHTML.

Hello! http://pulkomandy.tk is now XHTML 1.0 basic in order to support @adele 's efforts for an HTML-based

I had to fix several mistakes to get it XHTML strict first (it was supposed to be, but I broke things). Then it was just removing inline styles (which were mostly bad hacks anyway)

https://ploum.net/arnaque-seo/index.html

Cela m’a valu (et me vaut encore) des attaques grossières et insultantes de toute une profession tentant d’associer mon nom avec des injures sur Google.

Depuis quelques temps, c’est encore pire: le contenu est généré automatiquement pour correspondre aux recherches:

https://www.izzy.co/blogs/a-glitch-in-the-seo-matrix.html

Le web commercial est vraiment une décharge…

What is Gemini?

I have seen more than one person ask that question recently.

So here is a thread explaining — what Gemini is.

But I need to give a bit of historical context to make Gemini make more sense.
