Fastly uses the H2O reverse proxy for fast and secure TLS termination over QUIC, HTTP/3, HTTP/2, and 1.1.
The project site compares its benchmarks only to Nginx. I'd love to see a more recent comparison that includes ATS (Apache Traffic Server), HAProxy, and Varnish/Hitch as fellow reverse proxies for TLS termination.
I tailored my #varnish talk for the #drupal crowd, learning many interesting things about Drupal in the process.
I was positively surprised how much we talk the same language.
Hope to see you this weekend in Davos at #drupalmountaincamp !
I rebuilt my #varnish server tonight using an Ansible playbook I'm writing on an updated Debian 12 Triton image. While working on it, I noticed the log was going crazy. I checked the connections (netstat -nat | wc -l) and found there were >4300 open at that moment. This was just someone with a modest follower count boosting one of my posts.
Before Varnish, this would have taken my system down for 20 minutes or so. I'm curious how far the new service can go. /1
Switching from Apache to Varnish has definitely made a big difference in performance for my Serendipitous server. Mastodon is pretty noisy and a simple thing like changing my profile summary (which generates 700+ external connections pretty much instantly) was enough to overwhelm the Apache reverse proxy server. Varnish (using Hitch for TLS) handles it with aplomb.
My question here is if there are any rattlecan varnishes people recommend not from Citadel or Army Painter? I'm looking to speed up the varnishing but not all my FLGS have them in stock all the time....
