New from me: Menstruation-tracking apps leak users' #data to advertisers & law enforcement, especially post-Roe v. Wade in the US. To address these apps, I recommend data decommodification, which requires data be collected only to provide the service (ie., period tracking) but not be repurposed toward other activities (like advertising). #surveillance
@NTusikov data minimisation and purpose limitation in EU data protection terms, no? Aren't there elements of those in Canadian (federal and provincial) privacy law?
‘The cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently approved landmark legislation aimed at preventing the largest online platforms from using their dominance in mobile software to thwart the entry of new rivals.
‘The rules — a narrower version of the EU’s sweeping Digital Markets Act — seek to offer more choices for consumers, such as by making it easier to switch between mobile operating systems and allowing users to download apps from other sources.’ https://on.ft.com/4ajcSbA
‘The move in Tokyo comes as officials in South Korea intend to introduce wide-ranging legislation to regulate online platforms, targeting ecommerce players to streaming services and social media providers. In Australia, watchdogs are pushing to widen the regime for online regulation into areas including digital payments.’
I now have an official work S/MIME certificate for signing my email :-) (and digitally signing documents). Possibly one of only 2 or 3 people across the uni with this (I needed it to sign a letter for someone from a country where digital signatures on documents are normal). #SMIME#EmailSecurity#Certificate
absolute chaos on a new unmoderated listserv this week as tens of people used the ‘thumbs up’ feature in outlook, which apparently now sends an email, causing an unstoppable torrent
Sooo, I had this exchange on here with someone about alt-text and whether or not it’s ok for people to go into other people’s mentions to call them out for not using it. He thinks, it’s not ok. I’m more ambivalent. But I was more intrigued by his need to call out the people, who call people out.
I was excited by the #Europe#DMA news back in March, when will we finally be able to communicate with #WhatsApp users from other platforms like #Matrix ?
‘Microsoft’s revenue in the [first] quarter climbed 17 per cent to $61.9bn, driven by cloud computing sales and rampant demand for AI-related services on its Azure platform.
‘Google’s Cloud business revenue rose 28 per cent to $9.6bn as companies seek access to the vast computing power and chip infrastructure to train LLMs and ride the AI wave.’
Spoons have enormous potential for humanity, but also pose risks, such as being left out on the table and dripping honey on things that shouldn't have honey dripped on them.
That is why we need to re-engineer our spoons to be aligned with human values like keeping our surfaces clean, saving excess honey, and promoting flourishing.
I'm thrilled to announce I've received $1 billion in series A funding to solve this problem at scale.
After years of friends’ recommendations, I finally had time to watch the first season of The Man in the High Castle. It’s an amazing drama set in an alternative US which lost the Second World War, occupied in the east by the Nazis and the west by the Japanese, separated by a Wild West neutral zone.
It really brings to life the horrors of the regimes, with ongoing extermination of Jewish and disabled characters and a ruthless determination to root out the tenacious resistance…
I was on the edge of my seat towards the end, with even the monstrous enforcers facing the consequences of their actions, and tension between the two empires.
The drama builds to a real climax as a main character returns to Nazi headquarters in Berlin (where just last week I was walking past some of the monuments featured) and Austria. I was stunned by the end. Highly recommended! https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_man_in_the_high_castle/s01
My only dilemma now is whether to stop there, or watch the following three seasons…
