Marveling at the world

Lots of Martian rocks and landscapes, some looking all too familiar, but don't be fooled by that: Mars is an inhospitable toxic planet. Let's not mistake fiction for reality.

I like dirt and rocks, but I Am Not A Geologist (IANAG).

What is proper to say for , an anthropomorphism but nonetheless an expression of love, is that it stayed in the battlefield erect and functioning until the very end.

The is still alive, and we'll probably be hearing about it for as long as it has power to transmit its beacon and continues to devote a few minutes of 's time every sol to listening for it, which may be well into Martian autumn.

What a journey this has been!

Well, the rover can't stay there and mourn 🥴. It still has a mission to accomplish.

It will probably approach the crest of the ancient river bank to the north and take a few photographs, while it is still alive.

This first image from let's us know that ended up landed on its feet, but if one looks closer, there is a groove on the regolith that looks very fresh. It seems as if something hit the ground in a way never seen before.

's 71st landing appears to be the worst so far. Both this and the previous image from 's emergency landing show deep fresh grooves in the regolith beneath the copter, some barely visible at the top that I didn't notice earlier, most probably dug by some part of the heli hitting or dragging on the ground.

Fascinating story about how the system #Scout predicted the impact of small (1m) asteroid 2024 BX1 on Earth, in Germany.

The asteroid was first observed less than three hours before its impact by Krisztián Sárneczky at Piszkéstető Mountain Station of the Konkoly Observatory near Budapest, Hungary.

According to the helicopter's flight log, flew on Jan 6, but went for only 71m instead of 358m that was the plan, 35s instead of 125s. The flight log shows landing at the same airfield Chi. There is no further info available at this time about what happened and about the condition of the heli.

NOTE: The log contains the only reference to the flight date timezone that can be found, AFAICT, seen here at the bottom of the image.

#JPL commented that #Perseverance's team may consider approaching #Ingenuity for a visual inspection.

That sounds interesting but is quite risky, as the terrain is difficult and the rover would have to drive up into the Neretva riverbed, and across the regolith megaripple field to get a good visual of the heli, and that's assuming the #MarsHelicopter is still on the top of one of those megaripples.

The maps show visibility and terrain. Contours are 1m.

landed in an emergency. How that landing went we can only guess from the only three images we have seen so far, all captured from the ground.

Here is a new RTE (the 3rd) image captured half a minute after the HELI_NAV images seen before (https://mastodon.social/@65dBnoise/111750833533763835). See alt text for details.

This RTE image capture by Ingenuity about a minute after it landed its 71st flight shows extensive drag of the front left foot on the ground (upper left), but not very deep scuff marks. Deep, possibly fresh, marks can be seen on lower right, where a small part of the front right foot would normally appear, but is not visible in this image.

#Perseverance lost communications with #Ingenuity during the #MarsHelicopter's descent for landing after its pop-up #Flight72, a few sols ago.

The helicopter was already out of sight and at a distance of ~1km, as seen in the map below. There is an obstructing mound about midway that rises 13m above the line-of-sight, which might be the reason for the loss of signal. Despite that, assuming Ingenuity's landing software worked as usual, the helicopter may be in good health, but
