I'm very excited to announce the first column of my "Decay Theory" series for Atlas Obscura. This one's about the death of the suburban American shopping mall. It's easy to write off the closure of malls as the result of online shopping - but their fate was likely sealed years before Amazon became the brick and mortar shredding juggernaut it is today. The formerly abandoned Bell Labs building in Holmdel, NJ. At one point slated for demolition, the historic site has since been turned into Bell Works, a multi-use complex that was the filming location for the series Severance.

1/ I'm seeing a lot of talk (still!) of defederating mastodon.social over the recent spam attacks. I have a feeling I'm going to regret this, but as someone on that instance with no current plans to move, I feel like there are some things those who are considering it may not be taking into account. There are loads of patronizing comments that people on this instance are "doing the Fediverse wrong". No, we're not. You can't have a democracy while telling others they can't choose where to be.

After spending the last few years working really hard to beef up longer format histories of abandoned locations on my website I am seriously considering pulling all but, say, three paragraphs of each and putting the rest on Patreon for subs because of how disgusted I am that the work I've done will be used in Google's AI training and search results without my consent. It is a very frustrating situation to be placed in.

Look, there's a lot of anger and dissent in the Fediverse about the launch of Threads, but can we all at least agree that it is going to be utterly hilarious to watch Musk pretending he's not not crying as the last shreds of the platform he paid billions of dollars for go swirling down the toilet?

1/ The biggest tip I'd like to give newcomers to the Fediverse (aside from the standard stuff like 'fill out your bio/pick an avi') is this: don't expect it to be perfect.

Yes, you will periodically run into people who are annoying/rude here too. They're everywhere. It's part of life. Yes, the way it works will sometimes frustrate you. Every platform is the same in that sense. Yes, you have to put time into getting established & learning how to use it. All communities are the same there too.
