Ben Riggs' rant against WotC is a bit unhinged and very disconnected from reality.

It's a bizarre way to try to sell history books.

@bedirthan It’s like he forgot the difference between history and fortune telling.

Hey Dad, can you edit my paper that is due tomorrow starting now, at 10:15pm...?

She's lucky that I liked to edit, but now she's got a lot of changes to make in the morning before school.

I have a pet peeve, and it's that a lot of tactical games aren't very good about teaching GMs how to be tactical and how to think tactically as monsters about to face a party of PCs.

1 DM vs a party of 5 PCs working together tactically will never be a fair fight, as 5 brains are better than 1. And that's fine, it should always swing for the PCs anyway.

Rules can be clear. Rules can be complete. But if the game doesn't teach how it's meant to be played, it is not a very good game.

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon @newbiedm I wonder if the way players like to optimize, some DMs (like me) enjoy figuring out how the monsters become a formidable team and challenge?

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon @newbiedm Like, in 3E, many people wanted to write for organized play and would pitch an “idea” of “a half-fiend half-troll black dragon” and we would need to explain that this is not an adventure premise.

@slyflourish @newbiedm GM tactics also don’t have to be brilliant. The monsters will try to split the party, getting some to go up to the second level. May or may not work, fun either way. The monsters will try to light exploding barrels on fire with obvious means the party can stop. Obvious tactics can be fun to stop.

Today I wanted to take a trip back to 2007-2008 and look at the marketing campaign for D&D 4e, and the strategy of positioning your game directly against another game.

http://whatdoiknowjr.com/2023/12/07/what-do-i-know-about-marketing-games/

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@WhatDoIKnowJR I’ve seen a lot of flack about this today. I’m assuming regarding MCDM. I’m curious which part triggered this. The Backerkit text? A video?

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@WhatDoIKnowJR I noted that it can be interpreted as being anti-Shadowdark, yet they have praised the game often in n streams and I think just could have used wordsmithing. But, on streams, Matt is often adversarial with aspects of D&D. It is perhaps tough to know what is okay on stream vs on the crowdfunding.

"Tactical" and "Cinematic" in a sentence together referring to an rpg is an interesting pitch. I'm curious.

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@newbiedm I would call 4E that.

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@newbiedm 4E is fights on swinging rope bridges, fantastic terrain, epic bosses, flashy PC powers. It’s the D&D movie Druid, changing shape constantly. The tavern that of course has a fighting pit and a block of wood over it. Swinging from chandeliers or battling on a moving vehicle.

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@randomwizard @newbiedm I like 13th Age too, but I found the opposite with 4E. For me, 3E was “wake me up when my turn comes.” With 4E there was so much going on that everyone was invested and even acting the whole round. I like how 5E kept some of that.

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@randomwizard @newbiedm A great alternative design is to keep play fast. 2014 5E does that well, as does 2E and prior. But a fair number of players today want more than “I attack with my long sword again” every round. And then it’s hard for designers not to complicate play.

The #DnD movie's long tail may finally be over.
It's out of the top 10 for Paramount+ both globally and in the USA.

Numbers below are worldwide for the year.

#6 for Google Store purchases with 221 days in top 10.
#6 for Amazon purchases, 154 days in top 10.
#7 for Rakuten purchases, 149 days in top 10.
#8 for P+, 203 days in the top 10.
#10 on Vudu, top 10 for 78 days.
#11 on iTunes, top 10 for 218 days.
#11 on Star+ (LATAM), top 10 for 46 days.

We got a preview of 2024 backgrounds and there's a major change coming.
But all the focus from the presentation has been on new products and schedules rather than the further reduction of story in WotC backgrounds

Alphastream,
@Alphastream@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan I am very curious whether other sections will shrink this way, becoming more mechanical.
