I appreciate Goodman Games’ statement addressing their panels. I have compassion for the many folks involved at many levels, from great panelists who are white and male (while being wonderful humans, like Rob and Mike), to the women who are on panels but weren’t in that image, to the female company employees, and on and on. My hope is always for growth over time.

I am planning to run a Star Wars game online and stream it. It would use a slightly modified version of the d6 system found in WEG's Introductory Adventure Game beginner's box (streamlined combo of 1e and 2e). 'm currently preparing assets and adventures for it.

My plan is to make it episodic, tell the story and be done. Not an open ended campaign, but rather very focused with an ending. I don't want it to be too long.

So... d20 derivative product which uses the OGL but closes off the new mechanical derivative content. Not a lawyer so I won't comment on the legality (though I don't believe it to be legally valid and I've been using that license for 23 years) but it is bad faith and unethical. Thoughts?

@morrus The OGL lets you state what’s closed, right? Doesn’t the publisher get to decide and it’s up to them? Or am I not following?

@bss @morrus So, is someone takes fireball and makes iceball using the same mechanics but it's cold damage, that's clearly derivative. The creator would need to credit the SRD for copying/modifying fireball.

What I don't see is that you have to include iceball as open content. I think you can still choose not to make it open. Fireball remains open, but your modification could be closed.

@bedirthan @WhatDoIKnowJR No idea if this helps, but some possible techniques:

  • Record yourself explaining it to a mirror. Compare the clarity of the recording vs what may be lost on the page.

  • Have someone read the text and tell you what it says. Note whatever got lost and clarify it.

  • Don’t edit the original. In a new document, write what you want to say again. Then compare the two and write a third that is the clearest version merging this thoughts.

  • Ask the editor which parts were confusing and suggest a few potential fixes.

These kinds of confusions come from our writer brain having a deep advanced understanding of the subject, and what we write isn’t clear to the person new to it. How can we better serve the new first-time reader? If we can identify what that new reader isn’t going to grasp, we can rewrite for that. Often we are combining thoughts too early on.

Controversial opinion...

Folks complain about the 3-book format for new settings (and I get why). But if Ravnica or Theros had come with a 5-10 level adventure included (like Spelljammer and Dragonlance 5e), even at the loss of some lore, many more folks would still be playing those settings today.

@slyflourish @MerricB @mtblack By that measure, Spelljammer rocks most products. I would note, however, that Tasha’s explosive start has not caught up with Xanathar’s slower start but steady high sales.
