Call on the government not to perform the morally hazardous feat of bailing out Thames Water. Rather to take it into public adminsitration.

The picture shows that 87 billion pounds was gained by two oil companies last year. While the Labour party pledge was (now dropped) 28billion to invest in a greener future.

Companies like BP and Shell caused the climate crisis, and in the last two years they’ve made a combined £87 billions in profit. How about we tax them properly to pay for our transition to just, green, cheaper energy for all?

"... in Scotland - where there is no cull, and the government has taken other measures - bovine tuberculosis has been eradicated altogether ...the [] government already ignored the experts when they introduced the cull in the first place, and they’re set to ignore them again. We need to send them a message, from hundreds of thousands of members of the public..."

Excellent post once again from Tory Doctorow.
"Reality has a distinct anti-conservative bias, but conservatives have an answer: when the facts don't support your policies, just get different facts. Who needs evidence-based policy when you can have policy-based evidence?"

"...what’s “Christian” about the so-called “Christian Right”? As a person of faith, I find the term deeply, deeply offensive — and yet journalists continue to use it, even as they acknowledge the contradictions... How does the Religious Right stack up, either biblically or historically? Not very well, I think, and for that reason the movement has no claim on the word “Christian.”
Quite so.

The conflict between minor local patriarchs, large distant governmental patriarchs, and wannabe-patriarchs lurking in the wings, often gets hilariously complex, doesn't it?

What is it with this fashion for putting the Euro sign after the number? I first saw it a couple of weeks or so ago, and now it's all over the place.
eg 40€ rather than €40
I'm not against it: just wondering what gives?

In many non-English speaking European countries, the customary currency symbol follows the amount, and is preceded by a space, whereas in English there is usually no space and the symbol for the main unit comes before the amount.

Different traditions in different locations.

Andii,
@Andii@mas.to avatar

@airwhale I guess I'll try looking it up at some point, but I'm wondering now, really, why put the currency symbol first? ...

Eeeh. Well. Mastodon has given me a new experience: I tooted a post engaging enough that I've been getting notifications of boosts pretty solidly for over a day now.
Better than a pile-on at the birdsite.

@seachanger That'd be a help, tbh, if it happens again. Though for novelty value it's been an interesting thing to happen.

Cory Doctorow on the money again: "The problem with, say, Meta, is only partially that Mark Zuckerberg is personally monumentally unsuited to serving as the unelected, unaccountable permanent social media czar for three billion people. The real problem is that no one should have that job. That job shouldn’t exist. We don’t need to find a better Mark Zuckerberg. We need to abolish Mark Zuckerberg."

"The most tantalizing feature of the ancient Indus Valley remains is what they appear to lack: any trace of a ruling class or managerial elite. ... here was a stable, prosperous civilization that appeared to remain that way for centuries without a state, without priest-kings or merchant oligarchs, and without a rigid caste system or warrior class. How did they manage it?"

"Cuba had made two effective coronavirus vaccines from scratch — and then vowed to share its intellectual property worldwide.... In August 2021, one of BioCubaFarma’s laboratories also produced a booster... more than 90 percent efficacy, on par with the leading Western vaccines. The cost of developing these shots was $50 million,...far less than the billions invested by the U.S. government and the hundreds of millions invested by Germany in theirs"

Who assessed the efficacy of these vaccines?

Also, if they shared the technology publicly, then all non-Western countries should happily pick it up... but none did.
