The moist wind from the Bay of Bengal is driving the felt temperatures in Gangetic Bengal to intolerable levels, too. I'm aiming to make the most of this heatwave by learning to make pickles and preserves, because the alternative -- climate despair -- is dangerously debilitating.
Curry tree (Bergera koenigii) fruits, ripe and ready to germinate, with more on the way! I cut and peeled one, very carefully, for a better look. It's basically the whole seed itself, enlarged within the fruit skin. Easy to sprout and take root, I think. I'm going to collect just a few more as they ripen, grow them in pots and distribute the saplings locally, and leave the rest for the birds 🌿💚
If you’re not helping your readers see the scale of what needs changing and the time available to do it, and beginning to clarify the choices which might fit both…
#ClimateDiary continuing to think a lot about denial, and how strong it is, in myself. Like, irrationally some part in me still hopes that it will suddenly go away; that all of this - climate crisis, Gaza, redundancies - will turn out to have been a nightmare, not true. In those moments i have to relearn and reaccept it all again. Which I do. But i have more and more understanding of how strong the instinct for denial really is. https://mastodon.green/@pvonhellermannn/112471933954570931
I don't remember the last time the USPS website didn't have a weather-delay alert at the top. I wonder at which point they simply say "climate change will impact delivery for the foreseeable future".
Dear friends, #ClimateDiary
The best carbon capture and storage system are healthy #ecosystems. I don't know if the photo here of this Youhiogheny River section pictures is, in fact, a healthy ecosystem, but it is a lovely view and there is lots of carbon loveliness in those trees and in the forest floor. I took it for my friend who wanted a photo to look at while he pees. It's titled:
Pix to piss to
Oh this is awful to read. I kept on posting about #Phoenix here on #ClimateDiary last year and worrying about homeless people in particular, and to reassure that 645 really did die, and 290 of those were homeless- that is just awful!
The #Vinca is starting to bloom. These used to cover our septic tank, before Nestle made us connect to a sewer system instead. It's no longer moist enough for a huge mass of them, but some individual plants still hang on.
(And we still boycott Arrowhead water for stealing our local water supply to sell in plastic bottles at grocery stores in SoCal - it tasted much better running through our pipes).
#ClimateDiary The Papua New Guinea national disaster centre on Friday’s landslide in a remote village in the northern part of the country:
“The landslide buried more than 2,000 people alive and caused major destruction to buildings, food gardens and caused major impact on the economic lifeline of the country,”
The mentioning of “food gardens” shows their centrality to people’s livelihoods. These people contributed nothing yet are now destroyed by climate change.

#ClimateDiary Kidney disease is high and rapidly worsening in coastal Bangladesh due to rising sea levels increasing water salinity as well as extreme heat. For many, like 65yo Khatun, dialysis is too expensive.
The whole of Khulna, once a thriving city, is affected by saline intrusion due to frequent floods, cyclones and tidal surge.
“The global climate crisis is essentially a water crisis,” says Dr Mohammad Shamsudduha at UCL.
#ClimateDiary And now #CycloneRemal has made landfall in Bangladesh and over one million people have been evacuated. I am thinking of Khatun and Ahmed, I hope they are ok, that they don’t lose their home or possessions.
