In a standard fascist tactic, police enabled pro-israel attack on Gaza Solidarity camp

Report

1/2

UCLA students at a peaceful encampment were pepper sprayed & beaten, while police stood by & watched.

Students blasted university officials & police for failing to intervene & protect them from pro-Israeli attackers.

"Several students said they had to rely on each other, not the police, for protection as they were attacked."

Is there not a route to suing the police for failure to prevent assault, not upholding duty of care or something like that?

Quotes from the article worth pressing: "Every military undertaking is supposed to have a diplomatic exit – the military action should lead to a better diplomatic reality. Israel has no diplomatic exit... and other notions that have more to do with Hollywood scripts than life itself. They're not the truth and it relates to something that's uncomfortable. After all, it's uncomfortable telling the public the truth. "

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 143.

Becky Chambers, A Closed & Common Orbit (2016), expands a plot element about AI from her first book into the central focus of this sequel. (implicitly?) picking up a plot from McCaffrey's classic The Ship that Sang, this is a compelling story of how an AI achieves it/her independence & their friendships that this entails. Once again Chambers has written an emotionally rich, unusual but highly timely SciFi.

So you may have heard that a Boeing whistleblower died of what local police described as a "self-inflicted" gunshot wound right in the middle of his depositions, a timing which… well, lots of things happen, but if someone were going to act on suicidal impulses that is not the timing I would expect them to do it with.

Have you been wondering what exactly it was he was saying in those depositions? Cuz here's an American Prospect article largely based on his testimony:

“As a Palestinian student, I’ve lost family in Gaza. Frankly, I get uncomfortable when Zionist students are chanting ‘no ceasefire’ on campus. That makes me feel uncomfortable. That makes me feel unsafe. But I know that it is not a physical threat to my safety. That is free speech.”

And this seemed helpful a comment:
"Howley, who is also Jewish, noted that, by the same logic, we would not want to validate the fear felt by a white student, conditioned under racist assumptions, who called the police because they felt afraid in the presence of a Black student."

It still gets me the Bible Jesus is a homeless socialist with brown skin, hangs out with 12 dudes and a Prostitute, tells rich people to pay their taxes and give their wealth to the poor, tells the religious leaders that they need to love everyone equally, gets a whip and goes hog on people using religion to sell stuff, and then straight up gets murdered for these beliefs. Yet somehow churches act like he's some kind of Conservative Haircut in khakis and a button up, who would support cutting welfare programs, and would preach Prosperity Gospel.

There's a lack transparency regarding UK deaths. If you look for the ONS figures — which are squirrelled away in a spreadsheet — you will get this message:

"Due to the low numbers of COVID-19 deaths (fewer than ‘influenza or pneumonia’), detailed breakdowns (i.e., by age and place of occurrence) are no longer included in the 2024 edition of this dataset."

"Influenza or pneumonia" are two different things. One is a virus. One is a symptom: lung inflammation, with multiple causes.

When a Jewish man protests your hijacking his Jewishness & the Holocaust to justify your occupation, & your response is to (loudly, repeatedly & falsely) tell everyone that what he has actually done is renounced his Jewishness, guess what?

You are hijacking his Jewishness to suit your occupation.

If that headline puzzles, maybe this quote will help:
"rather than reckon with Glazer’s argument that his “Jewishness and the Holocaust [are] being hijacked by an occupation,” they only—and shamelessly—use part of the quote as a way to make it sound like Glazer is rejecting his religion and culture, when the opposite is obviously the case. He is actually reclaiming his culture from the pampered pro-Israel media prizefighters who argue that Judaism and Zionism are one and the same"

The main messages are those old chestnuts:

That the mitigations were worse for us than the disease (🚨 false)

That the ongoing ill health problems are caused by the mitigations (🚨 false)

That Covid is over (🚨 false)

All three are important, but the first one is the most important right now. And I say 'right now' deliberately.

So, sanitation and immunisation are good things. Glad to know we agree.
Now, what's wrong with applying the lessons of clean water to air indoors?
If it really turned out that we need frequent challenges to the body's immune systems, then let's work out a safe way to do that. Let's not make it easier for new, potentially lethal, pathogens to run riot.

    Andii,

    @Schouten_B @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19
But mothers' milk and public health measures probably would help quite a lot. Finding ways to limit exposure to mutating viruses especially in seasons when we know they flourish (because we spend way more time indoors in conditions clearly very unlike our ancestral savannah, living in groups way bigger than the bands of hunter gatherers we started out with).

I'm very happy to eliminate colds if it were possible (I'm also happy to let children play in the garden, dig around there, occasionally eat stuff from there that hasn't been washed I'm not a coddler either). Meantime, limiting the spread of colds, 'flu, SarsCov19 is no bad thing. Seriously.
Happy to consider further if /when your "may" becomes "almost certainly". Public health is a numbers game -the greatest good to the greatest number.
