I honestly wonder how many people would support a social fork of because they are fed up with how things are going.

@Janik A social fork?

Being a game industry reject, I had no idea about these non-compete clauses. Do they do the same in the UK?

Hopefully, this will mean more highly skilled contributers to FOSS. Maybe, some new indie studios will be formed that might hire outsiders. I doubt it but, maybe.

https://www.gamesradar.com/games/game-devs-rejoice-as-ftc-approves-ban-on-non-compete-clauses-there-are-going-to-be-so-many-new-indie-games-from-aaa-devs/

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@iconiel They seemed quite popular in US companies, but I honestly can't recall if UK ones I've interacted with used them as well. They were never enforceable in DK, so I got used to just skip over that part of contracts.

This is like the best thing since way back in the day.

I'm not sure if there's even a better alternative.

(For some reason I still know it as draw.io though)

AngryAnt,

@delegatevoid Don't know how it compares, but preferring standalone solutions, I ended up using https://www.yworks.com/products/yed

so i have this weird plumbing situation at my house ..
when I open a faucet there is this drilling noise that starts because of a vibrating pipe, which is not something you'd expect from a house built in 2009
The weirdest part is that it doesn't stop when I then close that faucet again?
Next to the noise there is one specific faucet in the house that's also leaking during the noise (but isn't the source of the noise) but if i open and close that faucet the noise stops 😐

While developing firmware I really love to use terminal applications to debug the firmware/hardware.
As a developer I get access to this amazing library: Spectre.Console https://spectreconsole.net/
It takes care of almost everything you could possibly want of a console app

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@delegatevoid That looks really nice :)

Likely not relevant for your scenario, but if you're looking for a full TUI at some point, https://github.com/gui-cs/Terminal.Gui gets the job done quite nicely.

community,

Say a fork happens, what's the plan?

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@cbleslie 1: Form functional foundation with basic rules on decency and professionalism, board rotation, etc.
2: Solve build cache & build infrastructure.
3: Contribute to the fork.

We all know that there is some drama in the community https://save-nix-together.org/

It is not easy to manage fast growing projects that managed to stay off the radar of moneys and VCs for so long.

Who wants to speculate about how this will "end"? 😅

AngryAnt,

Haaa! I kid. Historical evidence clearly dictates it will all end in fire.

Am I the only one who thinks is just one giant mess in which almost everything gets lost in the noise. How did we come to this situation where everyone relies on this single, centralized chat service?

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@delegatevoid There are plenty of options when you don't focus squarely on mainstream.

Just like "everyone" relies on Twitter/The Facebook/Instagram/YouTube when nothing actually says you need to use those specific services at all :)

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@delegatevoid But to the first question: No, Discord definitely is a mess. Prolonged exposure not recommended.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@delegatevoid An open source project with only a Discord server is as pathetic as one with bug reporting, discussion, and issue tracking only on The Facebook.

I don't think that is as much an indicator of service convergence as it is of deteriorating quality of project administration.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@delegatevoid 100%. And a major disservice to the project.

Everyone involved at a core level should already be keenly aware of Matrix, with its sea of bridges to other services like Discord, Slack, IRC, The Facebook, Signal, whatever.

Choosing a closed platform in the face of that is just sad.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@logicalerror I dunno - seems to have picked up quite expertly on the experience from incoming recruiter mail stating that they "looked through your very nice profile" and "think your profile is perfect for <job in different sector, requiring expertise completely unrelated to any of your experience>" ;)

AI is certainly going to take that recruiters job, but honestly I don't think most would notice or care all that much.

crazy impractical thought; would it be possible to generate electricity from the difference between high and low atmospheric pressure over time?
I mean, probably? doubt it would be efficient though

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@logicalerror @glassbottommeg That's more like a wave energy generator - using a ballon rather than a float, but the same principle.

The impracticality is mostly from the sea based variant having a much higher energy output while being a lot less disruptive to humans.

Outside of that I don't see why not. On some of our other planets it would certainly be a lot more worthwhile for example.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@logicalerror @glassbottommeg Most likely. Wave energy generators are also quite massive.

Looking for recommendations for a Zigbee temperature sensor that is safe to put in a fridge?
I'm not sure if that even exists? Batteries aren't supposed to get that cold? #smarthome #homeautomaton #zigbee #homeassistant

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mhamzahkhan Strictly speaking only the temp probe needs to be inside the fridge - not the entire unit. A cable for a probe easily fits past the door membrane and could be long enough to reach the back - or where-ever the unit is best mounted.
