I really love that soft cinematography from around 2017-2022. Kind of dark pastels or a really crunched colour space without losing detail. I don't know how to describe it really. Unfortunately we already seem to be moving on from it.

A screenshot from Bladerunner 2049 of people in a busy food court.
A screenshot from The Batman (2022)
A screenshot from Riverdale (2017) of a brightly lit yet muted diner at night

@upmultimedia Whoever is moving away from it is wrong.

@NanoRaptor As I understand it, this look comes with similar features as a snack beard - only in stead of being snack-specific, storage is more general-purpose.

Let's say I wanted to move my personal server from Arch to

Are there more modern webservers than nginx in 2024 that you can recommend from personal experience? Or is it still a good choice?

And are there alternatives to a dovecot + postfix + rspamd mail server?

Or calendar servers you like better than Radicale?

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@blinry Nginx is a good choice on NixOS given integration with other modules and excellent config module for the service itself.

I tried using NixOS in a VM and it made me angry from all the crap I had to read just to install a theme. A theme! And it didn't even take.

How do people have the patience to use declarative package management? Or is it masochism?

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@funbreaker Not masochism - only a conspiracy. This whole time all of us were just out to get you.

I found a bug in my rowing machine firmware. If you row slowly, the cadence will spike to absurd values. I got a few in the hundreds today.

I wonder if the folks would appreciate a bug report w/ a detailed log 🤔

@aeva They seem pretty on the ball where customer service is concerned, so I'd definitely give ita shot.

over the course of the last few months, my views on have changed from "please don't give them any support" to "we need to eject them from the community as soon as possible".

their employees (multiple right wing trolls) have collectively wasted hundreds of hours of contributor time arguing about sponsorship rules to stop them driving people away, and have begun to be actively cited by people as reasons to leave the community in higher numbers than they ever brought.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@leftpaddotpy Seeing the board utterly cluelessly trotting down the path of increasingly publicly endorsing that company while evoking "professionalism" makes it aboundantly clear to other companies that being publicly associated with NixOS carries non-zero risk.

It is not even close to the primary issue, but the depth of the recursive self-own here is just so ludicrous. Such wild demonstration of incompetence only serves to further incentivize reduction of exposure.

thelinuxEXP, to random
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

All it would take for AI to completely collapse is a ruling in the US saying these companies have to licence the content they used to train these tools.

They simply would never reach a sustainable business model if they had to fairly compensate all the people who wrote, drew, edited, sang or just created the content they use.

Simply being forced to respect attribution and licenses would kill them. Will that ruling ever happen? Maybe not. Should it? I think so.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

You are giving way too much credit to the lame excuses of the usual silicon valley types.

It is very possible to build excellent LLMs from large collections of written material, properly licensed from the rights holders. That has already been done and is being done. The primary is just that the top grifters don't wanna.

Actual regulation could stand a chance to curtail the grifting, but claiming it'll collapse AI only aides the "but we have to" defense of the grifters.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thelinuxEXP @bouncing @vartak Laws in this area are almost completely opposite in USA and many EU countries. It is very natural that the participants of this thread hold opposed understandings.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vartak @thelinuxEXP Surely the fact that it is easy to get away with wrongdoing isn't really an argument to legalise the act?

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Abercrombie @thelinuxEXP Worth noting that not all elected officials are equally shit and that "things suck" do not have to directly lead to "meh, I guess this is life now - no way anyone could ever do anything to change it, so we might as well surrender" ;)

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thelinuxEXP While the power draw is downright offensive and IMO ought to at minimum see progressive taxation, it is worth pointing out that some grids are built ridiculously weaker than others - the assertion of collapse is as valid in one location as it is fantasy in another.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Openhuman @thelinuxEXP Seeing as modern day western copyright is a Disney invention, so as long as you're a corporation and you only tread on non-Disney copyright, you're probably fine?

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Abercrombie @thelinuxEXP Absolutely. No argument that the challenge is immense.

Similarly, not only is the time between challenges decreasing, but so is time to respond - compared to for example the industrial revolution.

That is downright depressing, but simultaneously our ability to spread issue awareness and to rapidly organise has also skyrocketed. And while the political side of things is both corrupt and brutal, it is less so than in the past.

We can resist and we can fight.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Openhuman @thelinuxEXP Are you suggesting that as a dane I might have heard a story about a little mermaid before the US merchandiser boiled off the morale and stuffed in some comic relief fish & crustacians? I find that highly unlikely and DMCA-adjacent ;)

    Anyone has experience setting up CI/CD. I'm currently pushing the code to github but I'm not locked into that and can switch to whatever is most suitable.
    Requirements are to be able to build an android and ios and potentially push to test flight. Also build a podman/docker container and push to registry (and/or even replace a running container in a test setup, not sure yet).

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @joeldevahl We run TeamCity and deploy to all those (not container registry though - just fetching the container images internally).

    TC does not put requirements on your VCS, so you can stick with github just fine. For deployment we use MS AppCenter - for all those platforms.

    🤔 I'm pondering to sue my Bank.

    IANAL but as I understand Art. 20, they kinda have to offer me API access to my Bank statements?

    I'm just getting really tired of their 5 Step CSV export that results in a broken CSV format that they don't accept as being a bug because Excel just ignores null chars while my current CSV-to-QFX solution doesn't. I hacked a fix but that adds a step.

    Plus they upped our non-profit sports club's account fees from 100 DKK p.a. to 1200 p.a. 😡

    AngryAnt,

    @MartinTilo Nice work! Very interested in what comes from this. Maybe we can finally have support for some of those juicy late-90s bank statement sync API standards?
