A biased test kept thousands of Black people from getting a kidney transplant. It's finally changing (apnews.com)

At issue is a once widely used test that overestimated how well Black people’s kidneys were functioning, making them look healthier than they really were — all because of an automated formula that calculated results for Black and non-Black patients differently. That race-based equation could delay diagnosis of organ failure...

The eGFR is just an estimated calculation not a real lab test. At best it is a nice screening tool. Any physician basing care solely off of this value is being negligent. I am sure there are many reasons behind such negligence including institutional racism baked into the American healthcare system. It makes me extremely happy to know that governing bodies are finally making changes for this particular bit of lab testing.

So I am actually ambidextrous and originally a southpaw gamer. I wasn’t really able to play FPS well until the original Halo came out. I remember being super excited that it had an actual southpaw option. Then when Minecraft came out for Xbox I was disappointed because there was no southpaw option and I was really afraid I’d never get the hang of the controls. But I forced myself to play it and somehow Minecraft rewired my brain to where I can play default controls no problem now. I think playing a creative game with no precision pressure really helped.

I’d say good old fashion politeness like saying good morning, giving someone a (real) compliment, and other small random acts of kindness. You do it because you want to not because you expect something.

Haha I took your advice and went to my settings to block it only to find out I already had done it. 😂

What gets you downvoted?

What sort of post or comment gets you downvoted the most? Especially if you don’t think it’s bad behavior in the first place, or don’t care. Does not have to be on Lemmy, but we are here… One of the good things about Lemmy IMO is that it’s small enough to see the posts that are unpopular. If you do “Top Day” on...

Well I would like to wish you and anyone else who’s celebrating a Happy Ramadan.

Thank you. At the end of the day social media and the Internet are just tools. The constant exposure to the gamification of human psychology for profit is harmful to all of us and children are less capable of breaking free of it.

Old Bay in home made hamburger mix. Only do it if you’re using an 80/20 mix because the flavor stands out too much if you use lean hamburger.

What lunches do you eat on a weekly basis?

I’m looking for easy and cheap options for lunches on weekdays. I mostly eat deli sandwiches and hot dogs right now and I always feel like shit after eating them. I think I need something healthier but I don’t have time over my lunch hour to cook anything too fancy. What do you all do for reliable healthy easy lunches?

Canned chicken over rice is my favorite poor food. Usually I mix the chicken with mayo and spread it over rice cakes. One can to 3 rice cakes is a full meal.

I am allergic to milk. If I ingest it I will die full stop. Food allergies should be considered as a disability in this case because if I wanted coffee with soy milk I shouldn’t be made to pay extra for something out of my control. That being said since my allergies are severe enough I don’t eat anything I don’t make myself so this wouldn’t impact me anyway but I agree with the principle of the case.

My husband’s 2003 Camry is still running. We have to rebuild the right front boot every 4-5 years and the plastic is beginning to dry rot, but other than that it just won’t quit. I think it’s got 180k some miles on it but at this point I’ve quit looking at the odometer because the car is going to outlive both of us.

Just wanted to say a quick hello to all the other women out there on Lemmy

I’ve been happily posting away here on two accounts since just before the Great Migration, and have no problem being openly a woman on the internet. Up to and including correcting people who assume I’m a guy, and even occasionally acknowledging the existence of periods....

There are dozens of us! But seriously I’ve been so happy to be a lady on here and have good conversations with damn near everyone. As for treating myself, I am looking forward to my husband cooking us a nice dinner this weekend.

We alternate cooking special meals on the weekends. Last weekend I didn’t a pulled pork butt in the crockpot and this weekend he’s going to do a nice steak dinner with mashed potatoes. Beef is a little expensive right now but we both wanted a real treat.

This reminds me of a running gag my husband and I have. One night while I was at work he called me to ask where I put the colander because he wanted to make macaroni. It must have been a weird sounding one-sided conversation to my coworkers because when I got off the phone one of them asked me if “where’s the colander” was out code word for “let’s have sex tonight.” I told my husband the story later and needless to say it became our code word for sexy times.

You can get a prenatal paternity test as early as 7 weeks however it is very expensive and most likely not covered by insurance.

Anyone got a good-looking, printable set of counters to use on paper? Specifically for Spelltable, but also in-person

I’ve already made some of them (loyalty and +1/+1) but they don’t convince me. I’m looking to remake those and also add -1/-1, ability counters, and a way to differentiate between +1/+1 counters and "creatures get +x/+x”. Would be nice to also add some counters for Commander Tax and for tokens (for when I have multiple...

My husband and I have always used those flat bottom glass marbles you can get for vases. They are dirt cheap and come in different colors. And then everyone just agrees on what color represents what type of counter. They make good upkeep markers too.
