BallsandBayonets,

Lab-grown meat that is both indistinguishable from animal-grown and is cheaper. Bonus points if they can make bacon have 100% of our daily vitamins and minerals.

BallsandBayonets,

Left for Firefox when they announced this update. I still have to use Chrome when I work in Google drive since basic functions like copy/paste don’t work in non-chrome browsers, but even without this update the minute+ time it takes for chrome to open reminds me I made the right decision.

BallsandBayonets,

It’s not a surprising issue; whenever we get a unifying leader, the FBI assassinates them.

BallsandBayonets,

I dumped seltzer water into the ocean so now some of it is carbonated, boom earth unflattened.

BallsandBayonets,

I’ve never left my phone, keys, or wallet in a public bathroom either, and those can’t kill anyone (unless you use the phone to read your comment, which causes death by proximity to stupid).

BallsandBayonets,

But what other pants exist for everyday wear?

I ask, being about 60% serious. To me, nothing is as comfortable yet good in almost all situations as jeans. Anything more formal makes me feel afraid to get dirty, and I don’t wear sweatpants outside of the home. Ok, maybe I’m closer to 80% serious; but fortunately I also don’t care if I’m judged for wearing jeans with jeans. I have yet to also wear my denim shirt under my jean jacket with jeans, but that day will come (albeit with the intent of looking a little ridiculous).

BallsandBayonets,

It’s my niceish early spring/fall jacket. Unfortunately that season usually amounts to a grand total of four days per year; the rest is either too cold, too hot, or both.

BallsandBayonets,

The last paragraph is the most important, imo. When I last worked an office job, in the before (Covid) times, the rare occasions when I would work from home due to being sick were my least productive days from the company’s perspective. But they were essential for me to mentally recharge or recover from illness (in a civilized society of course we’d have free healthcare and unlimited zero-work sick days).

If I had a similar job with WFH days I would almost certainly be less productive than I would be if I was 100% in the office, but I’d also be less stressed, happier, and healthier. Less likely to need full sick days. Less likely to job hop after a year. Less likely to sneak alcohol in my coffee mug to deal with coworkers and clients. And the world would keep on spinning, no one would die, there would be no measurable impact on the world other than the stock price/CEOs bonus maybe being down a few cents.

I get that being more productive is how we can sell healthier work habits to the capitalists, but let’s not drink the koolade. There’s an immeasurable number of things more important in life than one’s productivity at work.

BallsandBayonets,

Yeah but the future generation will be all conservatives, by your logic. So fuck it, I’ll be dead and happy!

BallsandBayonets,

Overpopulation as a dogwhistle for racism is a conservative myth.

Overpopulation in a “I’d rather not turn Earth into Coruscant and so many of our climate and food/water issues would be easier to deal with if the global birth rate slowed voluntarily” is not.

BallsandBayonets,

Damn millennials with their ecological collapse; killing the windshield wiper fluid industry!

BallsandBayonets,

Overcooked highlights the struggle of working in a restaurant, and anything that paints the working class as anything other than lazy freeloaders is political. /s

BallsandBayonets,

The Onion got less funny when the real world became crazier than their satire. Not their fault; it’s hard to be more insane than reality.

BallsandBayonets,

This is something that I’ve noticed is worse on Lemmy than it was on Reddit, and it was already pretty bad on Reddit. Insulting people doesn’t get them to support your viewpoint. To convince disillusioned voters to hold their nose and vote blue no matter who, they have to be convinced why their individual vote has an impact in a system where the electoral college can (and regularly does) vote contrary to the popular vote. They have to be shown that it’s worth participating in a system that makes progress slow and difficult but allows evil to be done quickly and with great impact.

They have to be given hope, not fear.

BallsandBayonets,

I was pretty close to needing to, and may be again soon. Needing to shower is a big issue, as is needing a place to keep my dog when I’m at work. Fortunately I have a good network of friends that I’m pretty sure I’d have a couch to crash on for a month or so but it is a perpetual concern in the back of my mind.

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don’t do this not because they can’t but because they don’t want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

BallsandBayonets,

Sadly in my experience the boots theory is no longer accurate as the $50 pair of boots fall apart as quickly as the $10 pair, especially when talking about electronics. There may be longer lasting devices out there but the price is so beyond my price range that it may as well not exist.

Updated for 2024, the boots theory would read something more like a $50 pair of boots lasts for one year and is mostly comfortable to wear, the $10 pair lasts for one year but is uncomfortable to wear, and the $2000 pair of boots is comfortable and will last many years but anyone who buys them will toss them after one year anyway when “the fashion” changes.

BallsandBayonets,

That’s the thing about capitalism, it doesn’t have to be a conspiracy to be evil. Capitalism will optimize for the cheapest option to acquire the most profit, and generally the cheapest option is also the one that’s the worst for the workers/environment/consumers.

BallsandBayonets,

Owners are quick to complain that labor is so expensive but will never work at their own business. “Oh but I own six restaurants, I couldn’t possibly work at each one, I have to spend my time “managing” all six!” Owning more than one business is the problem. If you want to own a business you need to work at that business. Physically.

I admit I don’t know how that looks for global megacorporations but I’m pretty sure the answer is we shouldn’t have allowed global megacorporations to exist.

BallsandBayonets,

Ok then! One vote for Trump is better than multiple not-votes for no one, so I’ll vote for Trump!

/s

BallsandBayonets,

And we’ll happily blame people like you, whose toxic attitude is half the reason we’re choosing not to choose in the first place.

BallsandBayonets,

The bad people are already in power. Always have been, at least in my lifetime. Am I supposed to find comfort in voting for bad people because other people are worse? It’s as hollow of an argument as “other people have worse lives than you do so you’re not allowed to care that your life sucks.”

BallsandBayonets,

The playable character actually eats milk on toast.

BallsandBayonets,

I had a similar moment of confusion when I realized “normal” people have to put forth effort to think. Your brains aren’t always on, always thinking, about everything? You don’t always notice every little detail (though sometimes at the expense of the bigger picture)? How can you do one thing over and over again without getting bored? You just obey and believe things you’re told? You can follow rules you don’t personally understand a need for? You’ve been doing a thing the same way forever just because that’s the way it’s always been done?

Sometimes it’s aggravating to me as it seems like other people are being intentionally obtuse, but other times I envy the ability to float through life, free of thoughts and therefore free of anxiety.

BallsandBayonets,

I actually think it’s one of the lesser used tropes; a far more often used trope is groundhog day and that episode is absolute gold.

BallsandBayonets,

Rise of Skywalker neither showed nor telled (told). Supposedly the story behind Palpatine coming back was told in a temporary series of missions in the Star Wars Battlefront video game (and Squadrons had some hints in their too if I recall). Of course that was a big failure so now the TV show writers are filling in the blanks because at least they are fans first and money-makers second.

And of course RoS was a giant overreaction to Disney panicking over a vocal minority of perpetually displeased fans didn’t like Star Wars being taken in a new direction in TLJ, so they asked JJ Abrams to take a wet sack of memberberries and turn it into a movie (again).
