I can see some minor benefits - I use it for the odd bit of mundane writing and some of the image creation stuff is interesting, and I knew that a lot of people use it for coding etc - but mostly it seems to be about making more cash for corporations and stuffing the internet with bots and fake content. Am I missing something...
I don’t know if any day makes more sense, it’s really a question of habits.
Sunday is often associated to religion because it is church day for christians, that might explain why most country start or end the week on that day. I could imagine that jewish country could prefer using saturday as the first (or last) day of the week.
In my biased french mind, it is weird to break the ‘weekend’ into two different weeks, it makes sense to me that those two days are at the end of the week.
I definitely consume too much dystopian content to be a fair dystopian barometer, but the sheer amount of ads being pushed my way is starting to make me feel legitimately anxious. It feels like a techno-dystopia where all of the neat and artistic elements have been extracted and then ground into dust for our corporate overlords....
Living room tv is a large display for my living room laptop, my remote is a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, youtube is in firefox with UBO and sponsor block. Streaming is emby in the browser.
I agree that we are living in an Ads-nightmare but there are ways to avoid them.
Enshittification became popular in 2023 after it was used in a blog post by author of The Internet Con, Cory Doctorow, who used it to describe how digital platforms can become worse and worse:...
There was a project that I believe would have (will?) solve this problem of the platform, it is callede maidsafe. Basically the idea is that the users are always in control of their data and the services can only access it when the users want to use it. It worked by decoupling data and services and users own and control all the data they produce, meaning they can always take them elsewhere.
It also take remuneration of service/content provider into account, and all data is safely encrypted.
It’s been more than 10years and the project still hasn’t been released, I doubt it’s ever going to come out, but the idea was really cool.
I rember I built a small website on the system when it was in early stage, and an interface for git, it was really cool to use. Anyway…
Why do you think meditation is not this ? Just like prayer, there isn’t one “proper” way of meditating, you are free to do it just the way you want it.
In France (and probably other countries too) there is an actual real group of people advocating that we can get all our nutrients from the sun and don’t need to eat, they also claim they stare at the sun every day for hours. They make youtube video, and have lots of followers…
Of course they claim exactly what is said in this joke.
You would think so but what seems to happen with open source is: for every person with evil intent that sees the flaw and exploit it there is more persons with good intent that sees it and report/fix it.
During that time, closed source have the opposite balance, less people can fix flaws, but the same amount of evil people than open source finds them and exploit them.
Might be… the article is really unclear, but I really don’t think it is, they already factored in 42million in charges from the 49m… There something I don’t understand with this.
I understand, I don’t know exactly how I would feel if this scenario hapened.
But regardless, I can’t control what people do with the characters I love, even the rightful onwner can defame a character I love, and they sometimes do (I’m thinking of detective pikachu, which I didn’t like, because of exactly what you are talking about).
At the same time, some stories written by non-owner are amazing, and really extended my understanding or appreciation of a character, had they been prevented to write those because of copyright enforcement, I would never have had these great ideas and take on the characters.
Maybe instead of preventing other people from writing stories about preexisting character they didn’t create, we could instead enforce that derivative stories must contain a disclaimer for people that want to avoid non-canon.
Anyway, thank you for taking the time to explain, I’m really interested in how property (intellectual or physical) shape our society, and all point of view is interesting to ear and take into account.

The frequency and duration of ad breaks is beginning to make me feel like I’m in that black mirror episode where they had to pay to stop ads from constantly playing.
