I think enough time has passed that we can finally get this out in the open:

Dejah Thoris was actually quite comparable and I'm tired of pretending she wasn't.

    @LeviKornelsen I've never used an RSS because I don't know what it is. I've only seen it brought up by folks that assume previous familiarity. (I had the same problem with Banksy: I saw a sudden glut of articles about Banksy that all assumed readers already knew all about Banksy so no context was ever provided about who or what Banksy was and why it was newsworthy that there was a new bit of graffiti.)

    "By opening this bottle of fairie wine, you agree that a single drop of every future bottle of wine you open will be taken from you, to be given to a tiny imp that will sit on your shoulder, observe you in the name of the faerie courts (and our allies), and urge you toward further faerie dealings that it believes you will enjoy."

    ...How I feel about tracking bits on my phone.

    @LeviKornelsen Unfortunately, the alternative to "fae imp that pushes you toward more fae deals you might like" isn't "no fae imp". It's "fae imp that keeps suggesting irrelevant fae deals that don't interest you at all".

    @LeviKornelsen @squishymage42 Getting rid of targeted ads means that you start seeing ads not meant for you. Sometimes I have to wonder who the intended audience was supposed to be or why it's even an ad.

    I was once served an ad on Facebook for military missile propulsion systems. Who the hell is buying rocket motors for explosive missiles from a Facebook ad?

    @LeviKornelsen The controls were weird at first but I quickly adjusted. It's easier to grasp by trial and error than by reading the instructions.

    I'm having more trouble figuring out which direction to hit enemies from. I keep getting hurt by the flaming guys because I'm hitting them in the non-flaming underside instead of the less intuitive "behind and above" (which one would expect to be only a little less dangerous than the fiery upper front side).

I'm never using S-mail for email or S-files for browsing my folders or the 20 other Google apps you rebranded and preinstalled. I don't care if you marked them as 'important system files' that can't be deleted. They're still just bloatware so I'ma delete 'em anyway. Thanks for the hardware though. I'ma take it from here."

    @LeviKornelsen I'm not much of an early adopter. I'll wait until we get to the "professional information technician takes off her augmented reality glasses and lets down her hair to reveal that she's a sexy librarian" phase or, at least, the "dramatically removing the glasses to express surprise at new information" phase.

    I have yet to see RPG setup that makes broody, disconnected "lone wolf" character traits even marginally interesting, and I consider this a fairly significant piece of evidence that describing RPGs in terms of other media is a practice with substantial pitfalls.

    What works in the analogy ain't what works in the reality.

    BrianBinh,
    @BrianBinh@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen You could make a cool loner in my game "The Curse of the House of Rookwood". Cool loners in media are only able to show off their cool lonerhood by interacting with other characters anyway. Rookwood rewards the group for showcasing flaws. You could have a "Broody Loner" trait that says "I hate participating in our stupid family outings", then every time another character has to "convince" the loner to help out & join in, both characters get a bonus.

    @LeviKornelsen You hooked me at caravanserai and landed me with notices on the job board.

    (I just realized that I hate looking at job notices in real life but I love them in a . In a game, the job is always yours for the taking. Quest givers never make you schedule an appointment for an interview then ghost you for several weeks before telling you they want to talk to you again before maybe offering you a probationary position that could eventually lead to the original posted job.)

    DM tip to really mess with your players' heads:

    Act as a neutral arbiter of the game's rules and setting. Don't twist wishes to screw them. Don't present them with "gotcha" scenarios designed to make them mess up.

    Just be fair and reasonable. Their paranoia from past terrible DMs and all the "Evil DM" memes they've seen will have them waiting for you to spring something on them.

    Then, when they finally let their guards down, just keep being fair. Nobody needs that "Evil DM" stuff.

    BrianBinh,
    @BrianBinh@dice.camp avatar

    @Yora @DM_Zeppelin RPGs aren't good storytelling mechanics, but they're great anecdote generators.

    It's hard to produce "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit" with an RPG, but you can easily come up with "Remember that time you threw the gnome's monkey at that cultist to disrupt the ritual?"

    It occurs to me that most of the examples of "rolling a nat 20" in media aren't nat 20s at all.

    "Bard was able to launch a black arrow and strike Smaug right in the soft skin under his missing scale! Nat 20!"

    No. The entire point of that story was that Bard was just that good. That was Bard the Bowman rolling a 12 to hit his mark after being told exactly where to aim.
