It has been ZERO days since I crashed windows 10 trying to hack on a DOS game

ChrSt,

@foone while I sympathize with you, I also assure you (as your are most certainly aware), there are people with issues of more concern ;)

ChrSt,

@gvwilson an sufficiently advanced query optimizer might produce equal („optimal“) execution plans for either query.

ChrSt,

@gvwilson and I can confirm (as I just tested it); SQL Server does recognize this and produces the same plan for the join or the correlated sub query.

ChrSt,

@gvwilson The query, as you wrote it, contains a correlated subquery. BUT it will not be executed as such (depending on the software used…). The optimizer understands the nature of the query and rewrites it, before executing, resulting in the same performance, as if written like a join.

For example: I have tables Process and Structures – they have a 1:n relationship.
The following queries execute the same, under the hood, as the execution plans are the same.

ChrSt,

@gvwilson One more thing though;

When you make the join "wrong" (forgetting the DISTINCT) you get a different plan and wildly different results ;)

implementation question: would it be possible to use the protocol for carrying issue tracking & discussion, e.g. to make version of or issue trackers?

I thought that technically these aren't that different from the usual discussion threads here, except maybe for some governance steps like deciding if the issue is closed etc... Perhaps someone already investigated?

ChrSt,

@exa isn’t a kind of federation already being implemented by Gitlab?

ChrSt,
ChrSt,

@kik @exa awesome!
I’m so much looking forward to the future, where we have the flexibility and distributedness of mailing lists, combined mit modern amenities of tools like Gitlab/Forgejo. Fedi is already so much an improvement other the zentralized monoliths – despite its flaws…

ChrSt,

@kik Completely agree. It's nice seeing it coming together. I'm grateful for ppl like you, advancing those endeavors!

looks like some of my patches only work on the multiprocessor kernel for now lol

ChrSt,

@Rairii been following your journey with this for some time now, which I highly enjoy. But I am wondering – purely out of curiosity; why are you doing this? (I just like to understand ppls motivations)

Ever had to work with "raw" byte arrays in ?
Then please take a look at https://github.com/ChrSteinert/ArrayPrinter

It's a byte array pretty printer, for which I would love feedback/suggestions/issues/PRs.

One thing I saw in comments about the removal of xorg server is that some might not see how much work is/was to maintain xorg server. I understand is hard to see from outside, but maintaining xorg server with the standards we have in RHEL is not a small beast. Let me share some:

I've been spending about half my time this summer with a 500MBit symmetric link, and the other half at about 20MBit. It's genuinely kind of surprising how little difference this has ended up making.

ChrSt,

@mjg59 recently downgraded to 100/30MBit from 500/100MBit (because we moved).

So far we are not missing a thing.

ChrSt,

@Rairii we migrated off of a Buch of 2012R2 just a few weeks ago …

@jernej__s @Rairii I guess so.
Seems to be more consistent, than SQL Server in-Place upgrades, where I don’t have a lot of good memories of …

4 "outlooks" represented here:
•Metro-mail (most resource efficient by over an order of magnitude).
•"Edge" only has one tab opened, in OWA.
•"New Outlook Preview" WebView2 based.
•Win32 Outlook
All 4 are opened in Inbox and previewing the same message.

ChrSt,

@itanium Metro/WPF is not that bad after all :)
I miss these days …

]Have you ever wondered how much the sun moves in one day? Probably not. But those of us who care about these things and enjoy observing the motions of the sun in the sky do it. We're called observers. Here are two photographs taken one day apart at the same time from the deck of my home in Portobello New Zealand, where, every day, the sun is getting higher in the sky as we run up to summer. . You can also see the solar rotation as the sunspot has moved!

ChrSt,

@iangriffin this is awesome. Thanks for sharing!
