@cstross So it turns out that HP is a dystopian horror, where our hero, Voldemort is thwarted in his quest for pure blood by the vicious wokerati.

What’s the oldest song that your brain has filed under “Fairly New”?

For me it’s Duran Duran - Ordinary World

Which was released in 1993…

The rain was cunting down when I left for work this morning, so I took the car because fuck that.

I’ve been at work for half an hour and the sun’s almost shining, making me look a right lazy bastard.

Seeing mentions of Mitch McConnell, and am disappointed to note that it’s not because he’s been eaten by an alligator.

Have watched some videos about Apple’s Vision Pro today, and it hit me why I’m less interested in it than I might have been.

Cost aside, I have no use for it. Not just Vision Pro; VR in general.

The USP of VP is “Spatial Computing”, of being able to surround yourself with apps and windows and incredible workflows, and, well, they’re just selling us expensive ways to do more work.

Honestly; who really does that much work?

For the simple joy of it, with the use of Universal Control, VNC, and a VM, my keyboard and trackpad can currently control;

2011 Mac Mini
2014 Mac Mini
2023 MacBook Air
Windows 11 VM
iPad Mini

No real reason for it, it’s just that I’ve just worked out how to VNC to another Mac on the network using Finder.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I’m aware that being able to VNC isn’t a wonderful new technology, but today I figured out how to not have to use RealVNC to get my Macs to talk to each other.

Turns out it’s built right into macOS / Finder. Just give it a password in Settings > Sharing > Screen Sharing, and away you go.

Oh man, just seen that Wayne Kramer died.

He was best known for for being the front man of the MC5, but I’ve long been partial to this solo track of his.

Just seen a post from a Cool Dude preaching from on high about how you’re still supporting Meta if you use WhatsApp, and like, my dude, show me the alternative, because Signal and Telegram and the like ain’t it for being able to message our family members who barely know how to operate a fucking phone.

Morning comrades!

Got my big NEBOSH exam today, so naturally I assume I’ve done nowhere near enough preparation for it, and am about to fail miserably…

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I must say though, I do like these open book exams. You don’t have to commit all the facts to memory, you just need to know enough to know where to look.

Fellow folks who have a formal diagnosis:

When you received your diagnosis, was it a massive anticlimax?

I ask, because my kid got his yesterday and told me that it felt underwhelming, and I distinctly remember feeling the same way when receiving my own, four years ago.

There wasn’t this great moment of relief, just a calm, almost bored psychiatrist saying “Yes, it sounds like ADHD. Let’s try you on this medication and see how you get on”

Meeting my kid’s girlfriend for the first time next weekend. So obviously I just sent him this.

Made the mistake of allowing myself to ruminate on the ADHD medication shortage, and how that intersects with how impossible it is to speak to anyone about it, and now I’m angry.

We’ve been hung out to dry, and it feels like no one out there with the power to do anything gives the tiniest shit about us.

I’m lucky in that I still have my small stockpile that I’ve managed to build up, but that isn’t going to last forever, and I’m already rationing it.

Looking for recommendations.

I'm looking a co-op game to play with my wife that has a decent story, and that can be played in the same room?

We played It Takes Two recently, which was fun (although incredibly difficult in some places), but it seems to be fairly unusual in that it it's a split screen. Most co-op games these days seem to need to be played separately, meaning we have to communicate via voice comms.

Whoa, Miss Cinnamon was just in the kitchen and she let out an unearthly war cry. I rushed in and she was staring at the patio door, her tail enormous, huffing and puffing around the edges of the door at some scent. I quickly turned on the light but couldn’t see anything. I’ve never seen her do the huffing and puffing before, I’m wondering what an earth the scent was. Could be a tomcat spraying the door (yuck) or maybe a more threatening garden intruder? A fox?

Gonna come straight out and say that one of the best things I’ve ever done is buy a cast iron frying pan.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Fuck your basic-ass non-stick bullshit, fainting at the sight of any spatula that isn’t made from exactly the right grade of plastic. My cast iron couldn’t give a fuck, and then will go in a roasting hot oven and come out screaming for more.

Fuck you, Tefal non-stick, with your rivets coming loose and your handle falling off, the cast iron’s handle IS THE PAN.

My manager complaining this morning that he paid £300 in NI this month but can’t get a GP appointment, and how he’d rather pay that £300 into a private health provider.

And you know what, that’s a reasonable view.

But as I pointed out to him; if he and everyone else in his tax bracket took the same decision, that would be significantly less in the pot for those who can’t afford private healthcare.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

That’s not an original thing to point out, for sure, but it’s one of those things that’s worth noting for people who’ve never really thought about it.

The NHS continues to exist because we all pay into it. If the rich could choose to opt out, it would be the end of it.
