Was chatting to one of the managers here yesterday, who said that he's not sure about all this 'climate change' stuff, and how the planet goes through ice ages and such.

I pointed out that yeah, kinda, but the planet is warming up really fucking quickly because of what we're doing.

And he said "but how do you know that"

Saw a post on here yesterday that massively clarified how to view Mastodon in a way that I kinda wish someone had pointed out back when I first joined.

When you invite someone to join Mastodon, invite them to join your server, to interact with the good people there. From that server, they can then interact with other people.

I (and presumably many, many others) saw it ass-backwards at the start, by having to pick a random server to be able to access the wider Mastodon service.

Well, that's my no-longer-supported 2015 MacBook Pro updated to Ventura, thanks to (and a lot of help and encouragement from @DJDarren). It even went straight to macOS 13.5!

It's not a simple process, and the documentation leaves a little to be desired, but to get a few more years life out of perfectly good hardware is a bonus 👍

@vnvobit I studied radio production at uni, at a time when Adobe Audition was still Windows only, but pretty much the industry standard for editing software.

As a result, the editing suite was a room full of iMacs, all running Windows. The hardware is incredible. @witewulf

@witewulf It's worth giving it a go. My wife has my 2011 13" MBP running Monterey, which it's perfectly happy with. I could push it to Ventura, but have no real need to do so.

Nothing to stop you putting Ventura on a separate volume to begin with.

@witewulf Yeah, the Metal transition was painful for non-Metal machines. I have a 2011 MBP and Mini, both of which don't have Metal support. It's only really an issue with certain software - in particular MS Office and Apple's own iWork suite (as it was).

Yeah, it's quite hit and miss on initial setup.

The thing that took me a while to work out is that you have to install the OCLP boot loader to your internal hard drive, then you install Ventura.

And once Ventura's running, the GPU acceleration will be non-existent until you can install the post-install patches. Meaning it'll be too damn small to see anything clearly.

But it's worth it...

@witewulf Ah, grand! I know when I first ran it on mine, it just happened to coincide with Apple changing something, which meant OCLP couldn't automatically download the correct patches. So I had to go looking online, with tiny tiny text, which then had to be downloaded over shitty, slow internet.

It was fun...

@witewulf You mean, running patched Monterey on a machine that supports Monterey in order to unlock Universal Control?

If so, yeah, that works. I did it initially on my 2015 which didn’t get SideCar/UC support.

Just install OCLP as normal, then run whatever patches it might want, then use the OCLP settings to turn on the features you need. It’s worth digging around the OCLP Discord.

Yeah, I’ve never been 100% on the upgrade procedure. So far as I can tell, OTA updates through System Prefs. should be ok, and I’m sure I must have done them that way. But often I just didn’t install OS updates for a few versions at a time, or did a full update install from a USB boot drive.
