Better Offline is fantastic. It’ll definitely be on my Favourite Podcast of 2024 list in December. https://mastodon.social/@ianRobinson/112280180385018715

@ianRobinson Can't remember how I stumbled across Ed, but I like his worldview a lot. And his creative use of English swearing, untempered by years living in the States.

I get his newsletter and his '15 Minutes In Hell' podcast last year was great.

I bought a bag of Starburst chews. Each one is individually wrapped in paper, and getting the sweet unwrapped is a huge pain. Several have ended their journey from the factory half opened in my bin!

That was also a problem when they were called Opal Fruits. So they weren't fibbing - only the name changed.

@ianRobinson 1999? I could have sworn it was earlier, while I was: a) at university; and b) an NME reader.
Maybe they were always in NME while unsigned/pre-album/relentlessly gigging around That London.

I didn't doubt it for a second, yet it's still wonderful to be reassured of the inherent soundness, decency and humanity of Michael Palin, on foot of others reacting personally to this splendid interview.

I preordered the audiobook edition of Everything Must Go. The Stories We Tell About the End of the World, by Dorian Lynskey. Read by the author.

Its published on Thursday in Hardback, eBook and Audiobook.

Almost infeasibly far-fetched.

Australian is such a beautiful language 😊

I’m joking. I actually like Australian vernacular.

A scene from Anyone But You film. On a beach in Australia

@ianRobinson I'd forgotten about him! Also in a very funny scene where the Very Rude Word is used with merry abandon.

@ianRobinson Although my favourite line in the film belongs to Bryan Brown (who seems to have had a ball making this) when he's talking about Jonathan. I properly LOLd at that.

@ianRobinson The banner hanging outside my local Odeon was flogging the recent Aquaman sequel. It may still be there.

@ianRobinson A film very much of the '+' rather than 'Disney' side of the service. (Probably my favourite film of the year so far.)
EDIT: realises that means Thursday.

DMLeathley,
@DMLeathley@mastodon.social avatar

@ianRobinson I can quite believe that. I'd not see a Lanthimos film before, and my first watch was very disorientating. It's definitely of a style.

The story also needs one to go with it, understand it, and follow it as it unfolds. One (particularly daft) bit of criticism I heard was of a scene towards the end that neglected how a character had completely changed and developed since their introduction.

Well Lisa Frankenstein wasn't a bad way to spend an evening. Not earth-shattering, but solid enough.

DMLeathley,
@DMLeathley@mastodon.social avatar

@ianRobinson

Not very. It's way more violent than gory.

There's one scene where there's blood flying - which is far more hilarious than horrific - and the source isn't shown. There's another handful where the aftermath of a violent, bloody incident is shown. Other than that it's quite tame - and I'm no gorehound.

It's not Evil Dead Rise (the last really blood-drenched film I saw) by a long, long distance.

DMLeathley,
@DMLeathley@mastodon.social avatar

@ianRobinson You're right about Kathryn Newton - she's great in the lead. Did you know that she's also a pretty good golfer?

DMLeathley,
@DMLeathley@mastodon.social avatar

@ianRobinson I haven't seen part one yet! If I get chance to watch that on Netflix first (there's a possibility next weekend) then I'll probably go after that.

Lisa Frankenstein film also opens today. Kathryn Newton is usually fantastic in everything. I’ll go see it mid week when I’m all Dune’d out.

Also, watch The Map of Tiny Perfect things if you have Prime. She’s superb in that. Terrible driver though 😂

DMLeathley,
@DMLeathley@mastodon.social avatar

@ianRobinson I think I'll go see it this weekend - the trailer was enticingly goofy.

Ireland need 40 runs to win with 6 wickets in hand to beat Afghanistan in their Test match.

It would be Ireland’s first ever Test match win I think.

@ianRobinson No. It's only in the centre of Dublin at the IFI or Lighthouse. I doubt it'd ever grace the inside of an Odeon. Might be one with which I need to part money. (I'm not averse to that, despite my Yorkshire upbringing!)
