January 2008.

Fidel Castro was still officially President, but his brother Raul was actually in charge.

We had to spend "Tourist money" at a great inflated exchange rate compared to "local money" (but it was still not an expensive place to be tourist).

A beautiful but struggling country, in a time of great change. There was a brief window under Obama when travel restrictions were relaxed, and it almost seemed like Cuba could really flourish. But it wasn't to last.

But the salsa and the rum were excellent.

D_Perris,

I have always loved seeing the Moon in a blue sky. It makes it look more like the asronomical body that it is, and not just a light in the sky.

As a Mechanical Engineer, it is surprisingly satisfying to design a ventilation system that doesn't need any ventilation equipment.

This is part of a natural ventilation system, with weatherproof security louvres backed with automatic Fire and Smoke Dampers.

The louvres allow outside air to come in during the summer to keep the space cool. During the winter the fire dampers are closed to stop too much cold air coming in and causing a condensation problem.

If the fire alarm goes off, the fire dampers automatically shut to stop fire escaping from the building.

Looking through some old travel photos today from 2016.

Georgia in the Caucasus Mountains has a long history. Wine was being made in Georgia 8000 years ago. The modern city of Kutaisi is said to be the location of ancient Colchis, where Jason got the Golden Fleece. Georgia was, for a long time, a buffer state between the Roman Empire and the Persian Empire, and became one of the first Christian countries.

In more recent times, Georgia has tried to become a modern country, despite some "bullying" from their neighbour to the north, and they are looking to join the EU and NATO.

  1. Church, Stepansminda, in the mountains
  2. Clock Tower of the Puppet Theatre,
  3. Bagrati Cathedral,
  4. Pottery stall with figurines, near Surami
  5. Cliff Monastery complex

A wonky clock tower, built in 2011, on a traditional pedestrianised city street. The tower looks like it is made up of parts of several different buildings.
An imposing large stone cathedral in the Georgian style, with pale stone walls and green copper roofs.
A street-side collection of terracotta pottery items, mostly bowls, pots, trays, water jugs, etc. Standing in the centre are two painted pottery figures. On the left is short and fat caricature of Joseph Stalin holding a sunflower. On the right is a larger figure of Stalin, wearing a military style uniform and smoking a pipe.
A complex series of caves and paths dug into the side of a cliff face, overlooking a wide valley.

The Shard, London Bridge, Southwark, London, August 2023.

The Shard is said to be the tallest office building in Western Europe. It was designed by architect Renzo Piano and opened in 2012.

It is a dramatic landmark seen from all over London.

I have always thought the top of the building looked a lot like the top of Sauron's Tower in the Lord of the Rings movies.

Clever little Salvia. Provide a nice big landing pad for the bumblebee, make it dive deep into the flower to get the nectar, then hook over and deposit pollen on the bee's head.

Evolution in action.

The beauty of nature can seem calm, especially in a tame garden.

But look closer, and there is always something else going on.

Who can identify these flowers?

This is not a quiz - I don't know the answer.

The photo was taken in the Department of Boyacá, Colombia in November.

Came across these pics from 2016.

The Caucasus is an amazing region - the scenery is amazing, the differing histories are fascinating, and the wine is very drinkable!
Although Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan are often grouped together, they are each very different, and have very different political outlooks.

A view over a city with bright sunshine and clear blue sky. A snow-capped mountain dominates the skyline.
A roman temple sits at the top of tall cliff.
There are green vines in the foreground. A brown stone church and tower are in the middle distance - the tower has a conical roof. In the background is a large snow-capped mountain.
Ruined grey stone church buildings sink into the grassy ground.
