That was the technology of the era.

I once recorded a bit of music I liked on my home stereo, then brought the cassette on my knockoff Sanyo walkman to Downtown Records (since bulldozed and now a Holiday Inn) to ask the owner by sharing my headphones with him. He knew immediately.

He didn't say a word, just plucked a record, put it on the turntable, and gave me his headphones, top shelf Sennheisers.

It was Art Of Noise - Beat Box

I still have the LP

Absolutely a unique and mind-blowing sound.

Around the same timeframe,
Jean-Michel Jarre's Zoolook?
Also very creative and sampling-heavy.

An old classic "what if" question is What scifi novel or movie would you like to live in?

Adult me is skeptical of most of them, they all have drawbacks.

Child me instantly knows my heart's desire.

I don't care how dystopian it was - Blade Runner.
And I would live not in Deckard's apartment,
but JF Sebastian's.

I prefer Ubuntu Mate for its menu-style launcher, in case that's any help.

I switched to Mate when Ubuntu decided to make Unity the default launcher - a bunch of icons on the left. Bleh. Mate stayed with Gnome 2, which i preferred. I like menus and submenus, even if it's what I already have in Windows.

Arguably if you prefer the bunch of icons style, may I suggest good old Windows 3 Program Manager?

My experience as Kiki says of being "deformed" by the Windows experience stems from a run-in I had years ago with the PIF Editor.

Last year, the manufacturer of the facial moisturizer I've been using for most of my adult life changed that product's formula. I'm not thrilled but I've been using the new stuff anyway. Just found a bottle of the old stuff stashed away somewhere. Pretty sure all my neighbors heard the squeal.

That was my guess as well. That is some pretty serious fencing, with the angled barbed-wire top! Maybe to keep coyotes out of the chicken coop? Bit of an eyesore, I would have put that somewhere downhill if possible.

Whenever I see "there is a planet in the habitable zone, but it's a gas giant" I always think gas giants can have rocky moons so it's still a viable candidate for habitability.

Finding a gas giant isn't a downer. I would even go so far as to say a large gas giant in the habitable zone potentially increases the possibilities of a habitable world. Even accounting for radiation belts. The number of moons they can have ups the dice rolls.

DenOfEarth,
@DenOfEarth@mas.to avatar

@isaackuo @Aaron_DeVries

Wasn't there something a while ago about how our own moon and its effect on tides was instrumental on the variety of life in Earth?

Consequently, have any of the Solar System's gas giants' moons been found to have moons of their own?

DenOfEarth,
@DenOfEarth@mas.to avatar

@isaackuo @Aaron_DeVries

Ah yes of course, not only the sun but the host planet would surely cause some significant tides.

I did not realise that it would be improbable for a moon to have its own moons orbiting it. Do you think it might have any Lagrange moonlets instead?

Not that they would cause any tides, but just out of interest.

DenOfEarth,
@DenOfEarth@mas.to avatar

@isaackuo @Aaron_DeVries @nyrath

Very cool! I am particularly stunned by Iapetus' equatorial ridge, which I never knew about.

I wonder if it was an inspiration for Kim Stanley Robinson's early work, A Short, Sharp Shock, in which a man with amnesia awakens on a world which consists only of a narrow strip of land around the center of a planet, separating two oceans.

The local people's creation myth was of a snake encircling the world.

One of my favourite twists on such things came from A Talent for War by Jack McDevitt.

In-universe, FTL takes days or weeks, and requires fairly large engines in telltale bulges visible on the hull.

[spoilers]
Later, a lost ship, legendary for its almost mythical ability to show up in battle, is found, and while the bulges are empty, it still works, and FTL is nearly instantaneous. They speculate that it uses alien FTL instead.

IIRC the algorithm for Dark Star was roughly

for each p in set(planets in range of Earth)
{
if (is there life?) and
(is it or could it become sentient?) // then
blowitup()
}

I rather liked Elizabeth Moon's writings. I discovered her books midway into that series and looked for the first few utterly in vain as they were out of print. That was the 90s, maybe I should try again.

Well @#$&!!! My bot blew up again during testing. 😡😡😡 This time I managed to turn off the power before the LiPo caught fire. Looks like one of the drive motor ESCs blew (hard) taking the receiver with it. The LiPo took a bit of damage but appears to be a bystander. Now I'm not sure if I'm going to have a functioning robot by Thursday. I have (different) backup parts arriving tomorrow, so if I can jury-rig something there is a shot, but I don't know... UGH...

My combat bot, "Footloose" is coming together. I had a lot of problems with the shuffling mechanism due to the 3D printed cams deforming over time. Amazingly, I found a business that could laser cut an aluminum set for me with a 24 hour turnaround, and the locomotion is now much more stable. Weapon is working, (and fun to test!) Now I'm going to add a wedge in the front and figure out how to shave off about 20g overall to make weight. Almost there...
