Troubadour of Nowhere.

Do something different today. I dare you. Break your routine.

Whattup you neon raccoons, hydrogen ghouls, changelings, and everyday Nowhere punks? Doctor Deathray coming at you live on the radio waves surfing all the thin spots.

I'm a musician, audio engineer, and general odd person. Often I make bad choices.

Good morning, afternoon, night, whatever works for you! It's #BandcampFriday and it's time for me to start a way-too-long thread about #music I produce and music I enjoy!

First up, we have my own album from last year, 51 Miles from Nowhere. This album involves some of the best musicians I've ever worked with. It's filled with raw energy, moody lyrics, and fuzzy guitar.

If you buy the LP, it comes with a copy of the Guidebook to Nowhere (a zine I made set within the fictional Deathrayverse filled with cryptids, an evil corporation, and general creepy vibes).

51 Miles from Nowhere is one of my favorite pieces I've ever released, and I hope you listen to it. My favorite reviews are "I'm not sure I like it" and "It's interesting." (there are also positive reviews, these are just my favorite).

I feel like I’m cosplaying success. When does “take it till you make it” fail?

I want to go DAW-less, at least as an option. It’s not practical for most of what I do, but it doesn’t HAVE to be practical. I would need a couple more compressors probably. And a tape machine (expensive) or some kind of ADAT recorder (relatively cheap these days). I have a decent mixing board, and an outboard verb or two. This would be fun, but I don’t know if I can justify the impracticality of it.

Someone not on Analog Revolution is my dear friend, Red Mouth. His music is like if "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" was an album. Or really several albums.

It's dark, moody, bluesy, and highly influential to me. I have wanted to be in this man's band for years, and, while the opportunity likely won't come, I have assisted in the recording of at least one album, Toska.

It's and I'm going to do some shameless self-promotion by sharing my albums/singles available now and comments on each one.

Kicking if off, 51 Miles From Nowhere. This is one of my favorite albums I've done, and I did it with some of the best musicians I've ever worked with. This crew, the Implements of Destruction, really know how to lay it down.

The vinyl comes with a cool zine that I typed on an electric typewriter and collaged pictures for. It's really one of the most fun projects I've had in awhile. We pressed it with Physical Music Products, the vinyl record company I'm now working at part time. @djsundog @connor_dylan @TaxDan are the Implements of Destruction, and they absolutely killed it.

@ajroach42 really made it possible. It's phenomenal, and, if you aren't able to purchase it, that's cool! Feel free to stream it for free! I'd appreciate it if you shared it, though.

Also! Have you checked out the public domain album I worked with @ajroach42 on? I’m thrilled with how it turned out. I’m very happy with my recordings and with Andrew’s wonderful curated selection of songs.

Anyway. It comes with a digital zine. And a physical zine if you order a physical copy. Shipping by January 8th.

Just recorded the first track of a public domain project we're doing with . It'll be out sometime early next year. This is a casual project for us, so I don't want to promise tight deadlines, but it's something fun I'm looking forward to working on more. This year we get sheet music/published music as late as 1928. I'm sure we'll do plenty of stuff with it, musically and otherwise. We love public domain (and I think it should absolutely be expanded).

This is the first year we're doing this project, and, if people are receptive and we enjoy the work, we may do more in the future. Since it's the first iteration, I'm opening myself up to anything 1928 or prior to record, and I have several ideas as it is.

I just did Bessie Smith's "Devil's Gonna Git You," and I plan on doing W.C Handy's "St. Louis Blues," "Lectric Chair Blues" by Blind Lemon Jefferson, "See That My Grave is Kept Clean" also by Blind Lemon (and the lyrics written online are all wrong), and several others.

Do y'all have any early 20th Century songs you'd be interested in hearing?

New legalese just dropped. Essentially covers are gone and they hold no liability for lost revenue

Hey makers of all kinds! What’s your favorite instrument, software, or tool of any kind you use to make music? I’d love to know

I need to add more acoustic treatment to my studio. On the to-do list. Eventually.

What to do today?

  • I have a set (or four) on the docket to mix.

  • I could use a propane torch on a shovel

  • I could source a broom handle or something and use this film reel tin for music.

  • I could do some blogging for

  • I could record a voice part as @lmoonbeam for

  • I could clean my studio office

  • I could write some songs

  • I could do demos of the songs I have written

There are so many more things, but these are the things I have spoons for today. At least some of them.

I have a new vinyl release from Analog Revolution in hand

It's part of a new series we're doing in partnership with the pressing plant, Physical Music Products. We're doing 10 releases, all with the same center labels, but limited to 100 units each, and we're screen printing jackets in house.

The first one is Red Hot Empty, which is appropriate as that was the first cassette we released under my tenure with Analog. We'll get some jackets printed soon so we can get product photos, then they'll be up for sale! Super limited, but very fun

You may not know this about me, but I am incredibly impatient. And waiting on this laptop to be delivered has taken twelve years from my life.

Musicians! Do you listen to your own music? I feel like there's an unfair faux pas put on listening to your own music for some reason. I think it's ridiculous. I like my music. I like listening to it. I made it full of things I like.

Do I hear things I wish I had done better? Sure. But at this point, I mix my own music, and @ajroach42 plays it everywhere, so I'm used to hearing my own voice, and I enjoy my music. I'm happy when I hear it playing.

Hey y’all! I could use some help. I’ve got a fun surprise bill of $250 for medication. This is my HRT and medications for my bi-polar.

If you’d like to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

So. Y'all know me. I'm a musician, an audio engineer, I'm involved in running a record label, and I kind of want to get into streaming/video content creation. Thing is, I'm not much of a gamer. I like games, but mainly stuff like Pokemon and such, but I know gaming is a huge chunk of the streaming content.

I don't really know of many musician streamers, so if you know any I could watch and kinda see if I like their vibe, that would be rad. I know of several YouTube channels who occasionally go live, which is something I could do potentially.

I'm not sure. I want to do it for fun as well as a way to get more word out there about what I'm doing, but I don't even really know where to start.

I used to do some sit-down vlogging, which I enjoyed the few videos I did. It might be fun to work that sort of thing in.

Any opinions or ideas?

Hey! We've got a pre-order up of our new public domain album, "Revolting Music from the Public Domain." You can stream the four songs currently in public domain as of today, and get all twelve songs tomorrow!

@ajroach42 and I have worked hard on this, and this is something we've wanted to do a long time. I'm thrilled to be able to share this with y'all.

This year has been very rewarding for me musically, and this is my favorite way to cap off this year and kick off the next!

SMALL is horny punk music for sad people.

This album, Decathexis, starts off with a blistering song, "Coyote." I love this act and their stage presence.

Things are bad. I don’t have the emotional capacity to be angry about everything right now. That doesn’t mean I don’t try to stay informed. It just means there’s a lot going on in my life. In a lot of our lives.

Cop City is bad. Anti-trans laws are bad. Sewage pouring into local water sources is bad. There’s a lot of personal stuff going just, so bad right now.

I would like to hear something good. I need to hear something good.

Hello all!

Time to get some funds up as I had to forego one of my jobs this week, which means less pay.

Do you love lo-fi blues rock? Or at least mildly tolerate it?

I recommend checking out my bandcamp and perhaps purchasing some music!

https://doctordeathray.bandcamp.com/

I have quite a number of music collections available, and I'll likely add more soon!

I'm super proud of the work I do with my friends @djsundog @TaxDan and @connor_dylan !

Some of the stuff on here is solo, the live set and 51 Miles From Nowhere is with the full band.

It's a good time, or at least certainly it is a time!

Check it out, support an artist!

I might actually name my studio. I've never named a studio before. It's really a mix room, but still, I do overdubs, too.

Right now I'm thinking of using this phrase I typed out on a Dymo to put on my mixer, "There Be Ghosts In Here"

Is it too long? Maybe. Should it say "Studio" somewhere in it? Maybe. It's just one idea.

I’m traveling a lot lately (my dog gets to come with me to most places!). But I also have a lot of audio projects going on (which is absolutely delightful!), and I can’t bring a whole studio with me. So. I need to get better with headphones again. I use to be more confident mixing with headphones than I am now. Just gotta learn whatever set I’m going to bring again.
