Spring Break accomplishment: I finally made time to move Cory Doctorow’s novels to my e-readers and phone. Looking forward to listening to Wil Wheaton narrate while driving to the eclipse next month. @pluralistic

Tonight I hosted a screening and discussion of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”. Everything worked technically and there was a good audience. I am very grateful for my chemistry students who came and contributed to the conversation.

Even if you don’t know Henrietta’s story, you’ve probably benefited from her cells. You can read the excellent book (by the same name) or this: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/henrietta-lacks.

This is what jet lag will do to a man 😬✌️

Actually, that picture was taken in December in a freezing cold telescope dome at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, with snow coming through the open slit 🥶

So perhaps it’s just my permanently grizzled state these days 🤷‍♂️🤪

My 🚀🛰️🔭✨ talk here at the SYNAPSE event in Delhi 🇮🇳 is in two hours time & will be live-streamed here: https://www.youtube.com/live/is2V9YqprGg?si=7GL0jBfxgXz_l0F6

@markmccaughrean your expression is saying “can we get this over with?” 😁
I hope the talk is easy and free of technical glitches!

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@markmccaughrean I imagine your expression could also have been influenced by the cold! Being photographed is hard enough let alone in those conditions. And unlike many touched up portraits I’ve seen advertising speakers, I really like how real this one feels.

Why am I thinking about this? I dunno, but I want a turntable. I've wanted one for a long time but never had the energy to do anything about it.

because I'm a lady who hates equipment, you know? i don't even have appliances. (i have a mini chopper, a coffee grinder, and an electric kettle. thassit. oh, a used stand mixer.)

and turntables mean equipment.

my dad had a whole setup in his music room. a nice turntable, a thing with knobs and levers, another thing that did something else, speakers, and there were a lot of wires.

every guy i know with a turntable has a LOT of equipment. and it takes up room.

but where do i start? i don't need state of the art. but nice and uncomplicated would do.

and what were those things my dad have? he was always adjusting things on the one thing and then the other thing seemed to turn on all the things so you could actually hear the music.

i was too busy using my mom's typewriter to write naughty stories to pay attention.

anyway, that's this weekend's question.

@DeliaChristina vinyl music is wonderful, I find it really comforting to know it can’t be deleted. Here’s a great all in one turntable: https://victrola.com/products/victrola-eastwood-signature-bluetooth-record-player

I woke before my alarm. Today I have 2 difficult conversations this morning, class at 12, then daughter’s state wrestling tournament until 9pm. At some point, I guess I’ll eat a meal? Carrying grief around like a too heavy backpack. I also knew it was cloudy before opening my eyes, stupid sinuses. Happy Friday, friends.

I’m working on a woodworking project that required cutting a lot of triangles. I came up with using a corner clamp with my miter gauge to make a little jig

A square piece of wood cornered between two pieces of wood acting as a corner fence jig
Two triangle pieces of wood that had been cut from a square

My work changed health insurance providers this year.

One of our prescriptions went from $10 to $92. Another went from $25 to $527 for a 90-day supply. Another one…I don't even want to know.

Simply adjusting for inflation, my salary is down over $2,600 from when I started this job in 2018.

When I factor in just these two prescriptions, and accounting for $1,600 they gave us in an FSA to cover the increased deductible, my effective salary is down over $4,000 since 2018.

I'm a little annoyed.

I was an always-on watch wearer through my teen and early-adult yrs, even sleeping with it on. I gave up on wearing watches around 2005 prob, only starting again in 2021 with a smartwatch, which has been fantastic.

As tooted earlier, that watch died prematurely on Jan 1, so I've been resurrecting some old, (approaching vintage-status) watches that have sat gathering dust.

Remember 'Indiglo' the big new illumination thing in the '90s? I put in a battery and new band on this Timex.

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@ottaross oh yeah, I remember Indiglo! It was incredible. Now that I understand LEDs better, I’d like to crack one open to dissect it. Also, that is a handsome timepiece. I’m glad you kept it.

SO's symptoms have faded but she's still solidly positive.

@ottaross good news! I tested negative again today too.

Skipping my day-six covid test. No symptoms threatening, so perhaps still successfully avoiding it. Will save the RAT for tomorrow.

With a snow day tomorrow, and the spousal plague status, there will be no cafe breakfast.

We don't normally do an eggy breakfast at home, but maybe I'll do that tomorrow.

Oh - must bake bread too. Oh shoot - no bread in the house means no toast for eggy breakfast. I'll still think of something weekend-like.

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@ottaross your spouse is sick too? Ugh, it’s awful. I hope they feel better soon.

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@ottaross my husband and daughter have now both tested positive, I’m still negative. I’ve had symptoms but very mild, felt better today than yesterday. I wish it was easier to understand what and why this is happening. Tonight I made dinner and sat at the table wearing a mask while they ate. Then I ate when they finished. All our routines are off… it sucks.

@Chris I’m working on a project about generative AI and chemistry education; I’ve been thinking about designing a guided inquiry activity to use in a class. But the more I think about the ethics of using these tools, the more I don’t like the idea.
