DrakkenZero

@DrakkenZero@retro.pizza

Actor / Cartoonist / Author / Humorist (and kinda bad at all of them), but I've failed at more things than most people have tried.

Married, poly, old and in a lot of pain. Played a doctor on TV. Former G+ Influencer. An actual wizard.

I know an unhealthy, generally worrying amount of things about the following topics:
#MST3K
#Rifftrax
#Riffing
#Tokusatsu
#SuperSentai
#KamenRider
#Cryptids
#1970sMadeForTVMovies
#Stargate
#DoctorWho

I am now watching Island City (1994) and the fact that this shares some DNA with Babylon 5 is absolutley not lost on me. Every single screenshot looks like it could be from an episode of B5.

Oh, and did I mention it's starring the One True Batman, Kevin Conroy?

Hey #monsterdon I need help remembering a movie name.

1990s made-for-tv movie, I suspect it was a pilot for a series.

There was a wonder drug or something that was released that gave everybody perfect health and really long life, and it worked perfectly... on them... but the undiscovered side effect was that it turned almost all the children they had into hyper aggressive mutants that destroyed the world.

I have a game recommendation that comes with a LOT of asterisks.

Pros:
This is an incredibly stupid, simple game that hits a lot of very nice dopamine-releasing spots.

Cons:
It has almost no actual gameplay
Its laden with ads.

I'm pretty sure the art is all AI generated.

There's no save function and a lot of people report their progress being wiped.

There's no settings or way to disable vibrate or sounds

Might be a crypto-miner?

DrakkenZero,
@DrakkenZero@retro.pizza avatar

@trixter I absolutely would not recommend the game if it wasn't for the fact that the actual gameplay loop (where there is of it) is basically like... satisfying gameplay version of ASMR. I'm not learning anything, not really doing anything, barely even interacting, just... existing, vibing.

It's very soothing, especially if (like me) you like collecting and organizing things.

I don't know what the heck is going on, fans, but I was at Target in Ohio and they had all these guys marked down to $35, BUT when we scanned they they were coming up at only $27. The big ones and the medium ones.

Credit cards going to be hurting for a little while, but damn it if this isn't worth it. If you have a Target near you, it might not be a bad idea to go check it.

Been actually properly watching GaoGaiGar while doing exercise bike cardio lately and I fucking love this show, you’ll have the Leader and the Science Guy discussing this astounding new weapon that may be too powerful for GaoGaiGar to wield without great peril and it’s literally a mecha-scale squeaky hammer.

DrakkenZero,
@DrakkenZero@retro.pizza avatar

@trixter @teknomagic Semi-spoiler for a 20 year old series, but in the OAV he gets an even bigger hammer.

DrakkenZero,
@DrakkenZero@retro.pizza avatar

@mighty_orbot @trixter @teknomagic Also, fun fact, in the GaoGaiGar video game Goldymarg gets used by King J-Der causing it to turn into Silverion Hammer due to the interaction between J and G stones

@trixter @DinosaurRobo @teknomagic It was either a manga or an audio only adventure. It's also where the girl symmetrical docking robots came from. They were all part of the GGG France unit that was investigating some sort of international criminal syndicate which is what they're investigating at the start of final

This is journalism.

This is serious, deep, investigative journalism, the sort that newspapers and tvs used to be able to do when they had local oversight and didn't have to worry about pissing off the corporate overlords.

Gods bless them.

Found a bootleg Mugenbine toy on ebay and the absolute best part of these are the fake Engrish names they have given to all the toys.

Tag yourself, I am "Absolute Being Deer"

DrakkenZero,
@DrakkenZero@retro.pizza avatar

@triphazard @trixter so fun fact, the Glebe robots are compatible with Mugenbine - the connector port (which was engineered by PLEX, the same design company that makes all the DX Sentai robots) was designed for the Machine Robo Rescue, and then were carried forwards into Machine Robo Mugenbine

TV fans in their 40s... what cartoons do you remember from the 1960s and 70s were still being rerun well into the 80s?

I feel like it didn't last into the 1990s because of the glut of new animation that came from the 80s gave them a lot more cartoons to re-run, but there was definitely a time in the early-to-mid-80s where things like Super Friends, Scooby Doo, Flinstones, Hanna Barbera were being used to fill out sub-prime schedule slots.

This came up because of a poll from @moon but I thought I'd share this with everybody.

They Might Be Giants album Apollo 18 came with 38 tracks - 17 normal songs and one "song" called Fingertips that was 21 different short song snippets, intended to play randomly while using Shuffle.

That said, a tribute band called They Might Be Gannets went on to flesh out each individual snippet into whole songs.

I used to be a huge fan of MTV's animated tv shows (The Maxx, Daria, Celebrity Deathmatch, etc). But one of my personal favorites doesn't really get much love... MTV's Downtown.

The show only occasionally played, and more-or-less vanished in the 2000-2010 timeframe, and I was worried it would become lost media, but fortunately other people were also fans and have archived it on youtube and archive dot org.

DrakkenZero,
@DrakkenZero@retro.pizza avatar

@heyfluxay I remember that one, though I don't think I watched it on MTV, I feel like it maybe got rebroadcast on Comedy Central in the mid-2000s. I put both these shows, along with like Mission Hill, in the same basket - coming of age stories for late Gen X/Early Millenials that were cancelled after one season once they realized that late Gen X/Early Millenials don't have any money.
