@gamingonlinux I imagine you already have test results, but an embed happens only once per Mastodon instance, which caches it locally. If 100 different instances cache your image, then it will be downloaded 100 times, which is nothing for a web server.
@gamingonlinux they didn't describe anything that should make a static site sweat at all. The scale they described is laughable. Their chokepoint is probably some overburdened and optimized comment database or something.
@gamingonlinux I think who boosts you is more important than how many. A single boost from someone follows by users on thousands of servers is going to do more than 100 boosts from single-digits. That being said, I've done my part twice in case timezones matter too 8-)
@gamingonlinux@rdnielsen The "Mastodon effect" is a real thing, but its impact will depend heavily on how a site is set up. I'm surprised a news site would struggle with it.
@jwz@julian At this point I’m more interested in hearing what that proposed fix is, as well. This should be public discourse. Mastodon is not the only Fediverse microblogging software that exists, so even if Mastodon were to put in a change, there’s a ton of other services out there that aren’t Mastodon that will still be doing what they’re doing now. Everyone needs to be in on this conversation, and get on the same page if the problem is to go away.
