@petrescatraian @OGjester we can't have perfection, so we must have the worst alternative. Have you listened to yourself?

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@petrescatraian @OGjester "everyone's needs are met" is a far cry from communism. I think you are building straw men to knock down instead of listening to what people have to say.

@TomF @mcc black holes are the event horizon. The singularity models what's inside. Whether or not there is a "singularity" is a bit of asymptotic reasoning that's basically untestable.

It's a hell of con the billionaires have pulled, convincing us all that their yacht money is the economy, instead of, you know, the people.

Reflect on this - if we eradicated poverty by constructing a #basicincome floor, think of the ripple effects. We would reduce crime rates, improve health outcomes, and even boost our economy as people gain the ability to spend more.

UBI isn't charity; it's a high ROI investment.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@graydon @scottsantens UBI is a natural partner to Modern Monetary Theory. Use tax policy to control inflation and flatten wealth, while using UBI as an effective negative tax.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@graydon @scottsantens we're unwilling to tax wealth. Until we get that right pretty much all money will flow back into fewer pockets.

@pluralistic writes: For longer-form works like novels, I "leave myself a rough edge," finishing the day's work in the middle of a sentence. That way I get a few words for free the next day, meaning I never start the day's work wondering which words I'll type"

I do this for software - end the day with a necessary cleanup, or a scope block just opened and unfinished. I never thought of applying it to writing! Genius.

LOVING the rain. About half the snow is melted already.

By end of day, we'll have reached the fourth straight month of 100mm+ rain here in Victoria, which hasn't happened since 2016 — and was the only year in the last 10 to have 5 months of 100+mm.

Our forests and rivers need it so much.

HELLO, DID YOU ORDER SOME FUCK-YOU-UP? BECAUSE SOMEONE DID.

Here's the anticipated snowfall for the south coast of BC from Tuesday to Friday, and the models are getting increasingly inclined to heavy snowfall.

This is about 45 centimetres for VICTORIA by Friday. This is the most recent map model.

Take precautions and if you can work from home, you should!

@snarkysteff YIKES! Doing a bit of shopping this afternoon.

Flux, to 3DPrinting
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

Added a 3D printer to the shop this week. Prussa MK3S, acquired second hand from a fellow who didn't successfully assemble the kit. It's now running beautifully. First useful items the next day. A bushing for my 5C drawbar which pulled 2 10ths out of my run out, and a press-on handle for the tube. Even just press-fit it provides enough traction to hold the work well. Both designed in .

A donut shaped handwheel on the window of the draw tube in the spindle of a metal lathe.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

I'm actually totally chuffed about that runout, by the way. I made up the MT5 to 5C adapter last week, and got the tolerances right - my runout in the 5c taper is under 2 10ths. Getting to sub-5 10ths with my cheap import collets on a hand-tightened draw tube feels like my first real precision success.

DTI showing less than 5 tenths of runout in a piece of ground stock in a 5c collet.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@mcdanlj The draw tube is 1.5" DOM steel, 3/16" wall thickness. That left enough material for the inner thread receiving the collet.
The most interesting part is the thrust secion at the back of the spindle. I started with just the collar, then realized that my 1.5" bore is a bit over-sized at 1.510 or so. Added the PLA bushing to take up that slack. But it was hard to tighten the collet, so I added a thrust washer between the collar and the spindle.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@mcdanlj The bearing doesn't sit particularly well. If I wanted a tidyer finish I'd remake the collar to the bearing diameter and make a second, perhaps screw-on collar for the spindle for the bearing to push against. But it's not a high speed part, it's just relieving the friction between the collar and the spindle so the collet can be sucked up better.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@mcdanlj The other end is a bit more complicated, though simple enough in form. It's an MT5 taper with a flange for aesthetics and to reduce the chance of putting a tool into the spindle nose.
I made the thing twice. My runout was unacceptable when I copied the taper (held between centers, picked up with a DTI) with the cross slide. I did it again, dialing in from the MT5 taper specification and almost blew it - the taper is given for the whole cone, but the angle as the half-angle.

The MT5 to 5C adapter in place, with a collet holding an end mill.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@mcdanlj To manage the boring, I left a long section to accept a 1/2-13 drawbar I had from my ER32 setup. So I set it up with the drawbar and bored out the 5C features - the straight section and the 10 degree conical mouth. So those get made right in place, guaranteeing concentricity. The hardest part was getting a good finish - it likes clean, smooth running when tightening. Then I cut off the stub in the bandsaw and faced the part to length on the mill. because I was afraid to part it off.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@mcdanlj The last part was dropping in the anti-spin pin which I made up out of an M4 grub screw. Held it in a sacrificial stick to grind the threads off the tip to 3mm to fit the collet slots, and tapped a cross hole to accept it. It won't back out in use since the spindle MT5 taper will hold it in.
But I failed to get pictures.
I did get a picture of my spindle holding wrench for when I want a bit more oomph on it. I made the pins in the new chuck, of course.

In 2009, I was caught returning to Vancouver from Surrey by transit when rapid snowfall stopped ALL transit.

After FIVE HOURS of trying to get home, dude in an SUV picked up 6 of us strangers & drove us all home FREE -- he was originally from Morocco, a chef named Mohammed.

It's one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me -- I remember buses jackknifed every 100m for 2 KM on Oak street, we drove by 'em all, & he dropped each of us at our doors. Took another hour, but we were warm.

Flux,
@Flux@wandering.shop avatar

@snarkysteff I was just picking up some stuff in Coquitlam , having ferried over this morning. In the 30 minutes I was there 10cm fell on us. Crawled down th mountain and it cleared up when I hit the Fraser. Now, just got lucky and have an earlier ferry home. It looks like I'll be home before it gets much worse.

The storm here is so severe that the dozen-plus hours of 90km+ wind and waves have ripped the concrete wall apart, where we sit for sunsets and all the guys play guitar. This was intact 2 days ago. This wasn’t even the tide at its highest.

Winds are still gusting around 100km/hour. It’s been a heckuva day. We’re lucky — this is the “low waves” direction of wind. The other way, and we’d have even more destruction. #bcstorm #yyj

@havn @brad paying isn't buying. Sell me a book, Amazon, you don't get to unilaterally delete it from my devices.
Breaching the social contract about a purchase is what this thread is about.
If I buy the album on Bandcamp, I don't expect Bandcamp to delete it remotely one day. That's the difference between ownership and rental.
