Last summer six members of San Francisco's @dolphinclub, all over 70, became the oldest American relay team to swim the English Channel. How could I not tell their story? https://open.substack.com/pub/fritinancy/p/i-made-a-movie

The New York Times covered the American Dialect Society’s word-of-the-year vote and miraculously included the winner—“enshittification”—in its unexpurgated form. | cc @pluralistic (Gift link) https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/15/crosswords/linguistics-word-of-the-year.html?unlocked_article_code=1.N00.wDo9.AZPARUsRKWKl&smid=url-share

@Fritinancy @pluralistic The ADS WotY election each year is by far the best, most reliable pop-ling moment of the LSA Annual Meeting. Also a fun respite from the goings-on elsewhere over the weekend. I am glad it has not become enshittified.

@Fritinancy @pluralistic Curious how NYT standards forbid the use of the word in an opinion piece (self-consciously subbing "enjunkification") yet allow it in a news feature (because, presumably, the word itself here is literally news)

There was a lot of swearing at the American Dialect Society's word of the year vote on Friday, thanks in large part to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic and "enshittification." My summary for the @stronglang blog: https://stronglang.wordpress.com/2024/01/07/the-sweary-wotys/

For most of the 20th century, the verb “to contact”—to communicate with—was considered “grotesque” and even scandalous. A true history: https://open.substack.com/pub/fritinancy/p/when-contact-was-contemptible

Word of the week is now on Substack! This week's is "sletter," which comes from the fertile linguistic imagination of style/culture publication Blackbird Spylane. Read and subscribe! https://fritinancy.substack.com/p/word-of-the-week-sletter

@Fritinancy I haven't seen "sletter" before and had no idea what it meant before reading your Substack. Interesting.
