Has anyone ever tried using silicone brake lubricant like Sil-Glyde in place of Dow Corning High Vacuum Grease? It's about 1/4 the cost.

I am thrilled and humbled to announce that my research will be supported by the Macromolecular, Supramolecular & Nanochemistry Program in the Division of Chemistry at NSF. In addition to supporting Kenyon College student researchers during the school year and summer, this award will fund a post-baccalaureate fellow. I am nearly as excited about this new mentoring opportunity as I am for the science we will all develop together.

    Does anyone on here have any experience with benches? Most are (very flat and smooth, softer) but some are (slight textured, harder & lighter). Flinn sells an epoxy product, but I have no idea if it’s any good. Please boost for visibility!

    TIL you can literally drink pure Phosphoric Acid and it wont destroy your mouth. I mean i knew it wasnt the strongest of acids but I didnt realize how weak it was.

    I found this out because a vitamin I bought is 95% water and 5% pure phosphoric acid. i put a few drops out and let the water evaporate then licked it and to my surprise it was tart but didnt burn. Should have been close to 85% pure after the bulk of the water evaporated.

    GetzlerChem,
    @GetzlerChem@mstdn.science avatar

    @freemo fun experiment! It is not considered a strong acid in that it does not fully dissociate in water, but it still, IMO, deserves a little cautious respect. Fully protonated phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is ~150x stronger than acetic acid (vinegar). In your mixture, it may have been present to pronate the vitamin to make it positively charged and therefore more soluble. The second deprotonation (of H2PO4-) is ~300 times weaker than acetic acid.

    GetzlerChem,
    @GetzlerChem@mstdn.science avatar

    @freemo oh wow. Wild that it's not sold as the phosphate salt. H3PO4 will def etch your tooth enamel if it sits there for long.

    Reading a student capstone paper about synthetic receptor agonists and the author notes that "Efficacy can also be determined in vivo by radiobiotelemmetry, which can quantify physiological levels of the 'cannabinoid tetrad' (i.e. hypothermia, analgesia, hypolocomotion, and catalepsy)." This has got to be the most sciency way ever of saying that you can tell if the person is really high.

    @LeafyEricScott @babelcarp @ellestad @tea reduction of nitrogen gas is very challenging and performed by a very limited subset of organisms. More common anaerobic oxidants (terminal electron acceptors) are nitrates, fumarates, sulfates, or other oxygen containing molecules. Also pure sulfur, some metals, and more. CO2 can even be used. This is where the methane in swamps/bogs/etc comes from.

    @babelcarp @LeafyEricScott @ellestad @tea I am way out of my depth with biochemistry. GABA synthesis is human neuronal tissue is glutamine dependent, but I do not have any idea if this is preserved across domains and kingdoms. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fendo.2013.00059/full

    It is a gorgeous sunny day - and our tree is thriving.

    We were a bit concerned with how it would do in the London clay, but with a bit of TLC, a splurge of food, and plenty of water, it is growing up quickly.
