Dear students, here’s the deal to avoid confusion:

You can register at BOTH family home and term-time address if you wish. PLEASE make sure you’re registered at at least one.

You can choose which one to vote at and you can only vote at one.

Pls vote 🙏

The is the tool. is the goal.

You don’t seek health to work, you seek work to be well.

You don’t try to prevent people going off sick to save the economy god, you use the economy servant to achieve population wellbeing.

Let’s recalibrate, folks!

I’m marking but not celebrating
I won’t say happy IWD. How can it be with Palestinian women & girls being bombed, made homeless & literally starved with the blessing & silence of powerful people who pretend to be feminist. At least spare us the hypocrisy.

Good morning friends, sharing my quote for the day. Finally I found a definition of success that I like!

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

I do resent this narrative of ‘us’ and ‘them’. It’s not only British appalled by position on . It’s a humanity issue. British non-muslims have that too & gaslighting them into thinking this is not their problem seems to be the plan.

I dream of . I have a constant nagging feeling that there’s so much in my head that I need to put on paper. But I make excuses: time, family, work tasks (lots of editing other people’s writing!) etc. I block writing days but they always fall below my expectations.

Help!

I’m a professor but I sometimes feel vulnerable, tired, bored, overwhelmed, frustrated, angry or ignorant, just like early career folk do. Maybe more.

Never in my career have I been motivated by those who acted invincible, so why would I pretend to be so now?

1/ In PUBLIC HEALTH, population wellbeing is our business, therefore:

Education is our business.
The environment is our business.
Poverty is our business.
Discrimination is our business.
War & violence are our business.

So holding politics to account is absolutely our business.

2/ We shouldn’t be afraid of labels like ‘woke’ or ‘being political’.

Our job is not to be ‘impartial’.

I am partial to acting on what facilitates or blocks population wellbeing, whether locally, nationally or globally.

The factors above are evidence-based health shapers.

Don’t switch off your empathy if it’s causing you pain. Switch on your speaking out about it.

Waking up every morning in a world where the powerful are so cruelly normalising the aggression on the powerless is such a heavy burden on the heart.

At the end of the day, only your conscience will be with you at your deathbed, not all the people who you were afraid it will upset.

@nisreen@mastodon.online avatar

The thing that many of us fear the most is death, right? So that’s gonna happen to all of us. For sure. No ifs or buts. I say let’s not waste our days until then in fear of things that might happen to us with a thousand ifs.

We all as human beings have a duty to protect humanity but never single someone out because of their ethnicity or religion to demand an explanation or condemnation of terrible world events. It’s offensive. It’s like saying they’re less of a human & they need to prove otherwise.

Some of you might say “the history of the conflict is too complex” so you stay silent. I respect your humility but there’s nothing complex about saying protect innocent children from being bombed. As a child living through war I couldn’t say that to the world then, but now I must.

nisreen, to random
@nisreen@mastodon.online avatar

Look, at the end of the day it’s about always resisting the dehumanisation of the innocent, whether they’re Palestinian, Israeli, Iraqi, Syrian, Afghani, Iranian, Ukrainian, Russian, muslim, jewish, christian, atheist, disabled, ill, old, young etc etc etc.
It’s not complex. Don’t be convinced that it is.

I’ve lived the collective punishment of Iraqis for Saddam’s actions. I can’t stay silent on the collective punishment of any people for actions they had no control of. My conscience doesn’t allow me. And frankly you don’t necessarily need the lived experience to see that’s wrong.

This preprint (not yet peer reviewed) study concludes that 90 days post Omicron infection in a highly vaccinated population (94%) of over 11K people in Australia, almost 1 in 5 respondents (18.2%) reported symptoms (median 6 symptoms).

You gotta understand that professional titles are vital to state for minoritised groups. Basically an ethnic minority woman feels she needs to state her title and/or qualifications to be taken as seriously as a white man. It’s not showing off. It’s a necessity for doing the work.

I just hate seeing the word ‘’ used as dirty political football. No matter what some might say about the necessity of this to win enough votes to be in power. They’re dragging the whole country’s humanity in the mud. The country they claim to love.
Despicable & dangerous.

If (free) peer review for journals is really an integral part of a research academic job, where would you put it under in your appraisal review? CPD? Research activity? Communication & engagement? Other?
Tell me please….

I’m not content anymore with posting my thoughts for the profit of social media billionaires. I do it because connection is important to me but if we can do it without being pawns for extreme capitalism then why not?

Media reporting should stop saying looks ‘normal’ and nothing like a serial killer. You would’ve thought in 2023 they’d have some guidelines against actively reinforcing such stereotypes.

I used to hate public speaking and strongly believed that I’m totally rubbish at it. Here are 4 things I did to change this feeling and make me start to like it:

  1. Do what you fear
  2. Accept that some people won’t like it or like you
  3. Do it on your own terms
  4. Be yourself!
