Has anyone ever tried using silicone brake lubricant like Sil-Glyde in place of Dow Corning High Vacuum Grease? It's about 1/4 the cost.

The temptation to make baked goods I can't/won't eat just because I have a fresh batch of aqua faba...

I almost typed aqua regia there, and yeah I need to make some of that too, but I don't plan to do that at home or use it in baking.

If you live nearish and want some of the good vegan/gluten (grain) free cookies let me know and maybe we can meet up so I have an excuse to bake them (someone gifted me another bag of almond flour a couple of weeks ago).

Can anyone think of a way to "quench" a HBTU/HATU/etc type coupling that doesn't involve adding water?

I've used MeOH, but I sometimes get MeOH esters which in at least one case proved to be inseparable from the desired amide product (I'm sure you know exactly how frustrating that was).

It might be possible to use <1 equiv of water with my conditions, but I'd really rather not since I directly load onto silica and do not do an aqueous work-up.

Does anyone on here have any experience with benches? Most are (very flat and smooth, softer) but some are (slight textured, harder & lighter). Flinn sells an epoxy product, but I have no idea if it’s any good. Please boost for visibility!

Any VT-NMR experts here? I’m having trouble with losing my lock signal in DMSO above 35 ºC. Using a regular NMR tube w/ septum on top. No spinning.

We're using a Bruker Fourier 300, quite a basic NMR, which is often fiddly to lock anyway (lock is slow, flock is fast but erratic - TopSpin 3.x)

Any tips? Narrower tubes? Leave it unlocked? (Expt only takes about 3 mins - gradshim at each temp) Thx!

Grad student: I have a question (asks question I can't disclose here)

Me: thinks ok, let's double check the NMR spectrum of HFIP

opens up a window with SDBS

Grad student: what on earth is this?

Me: the only website that still uses frames, which you're probably too young to be familiar with

It's great when I can teach them both chemistry and how much of an old foggie I am.

Whoa. Anyone know what's going to happen to their archives?

This is the page I get from trying to follow a scifinder link...

TLDR: Heterocycles (the Japanese journal) is suspending publication as of December 2023.

Such features provided convenience to readers. The objectives of the special issues were to praise the achievements of the world’s distinguished organic chemists headed by Nobel Prize recipients, as well as to offer significant contributions to the progress and development of heterocyclic chemistry, and the special issues also received enormous support from chemists in related fields throughout the world. “New Natural Products” have also been highly acclaimed as unique information sources for natural products chemistry. Heterocycles grew due to the tireless effort and cooperation of our readers and contributors, and we have also made regular improvements to provide valuable information from an academic standpoint to researchers in related academic societies and industries who study heterocyclic chemistry. On the other hand, Heterocycles has completed its role of promoting the recognition of heterocyclic chemistry as a discipline that traverses various fields rather than being limited to one domain. Therefore, we decided to suspend publication at this time. We sincerely apologize to our readers for this sudden notification of suspension of publication, and we request your kind understanding. We are very grateful for the tremendous support that you have provided over the long period of fifty years since the first publication of Heterocycles.

Anyone have a suggestion for how to keep a sonicating water bath cool overnight (supposed to be RT) that doesn't involving putting it in a refrigerator?

I was thinking recirculating pump with a lot of tubing running through an ice tub, but it would start out probably too cold and might not last all night. Recirculating chiller maybe? Though I'm not sure I have one that would do the right temperature and I don't want to fill the bath with ethylene glycol...

I'm all grown up & have left university! After 24 years as an academic in the UK & NZ, today is my last day. Good news (for me) is that I do actually have a new job to go to on Monday (time to see if chemistry is useful in the real world). The MakingMolecules 1pagers will slow down for a bit as I get up to speed in a new line of work, but they will continue...🤞

In this David Schultz et al. present the photoinduced electron spin polarisation (ESP) of a spin- ½ organic radical (nitronyl nitroxide), in a series of Pt(II) complexes comprised of 4,4’-di-tert-butyl-2,2’-bipyridine and 3-tert-butylcatecholate (CAT) ligands, where the CAT ligand is substituted with (CH3)n-meta-phenyl-NN groups.

Not the summary I set out to draw. Here is a muddled overview of collision theory for the rates of reaction. This was meant to be the bottom third of what will now be next week's organic chemist's simplification of the rates of reaction.
For 24 years, I have managed to avoid teaching this subject, so this is a bit rough but I hope it has some use (just don't show a physical chemist). Hope it is useful for & please tell me what to correct!
