    I mean, what an excellent learning opportunity I have here.

    So many of the reviews I've seen of the Vision Pro talk about it being the best TV screen you'll ever see. That's great, but what's wrong with building the best TV screen everyone can enjoy, or going to the movies and seeing something with friends on that big screen? In a service based economy and society, isolating everyone with VR headsets seems a questionable approach.

    GrantMeStrength,
    @GrantMeStrength@hachyderm.io avatar

    @machias it’s possible to have a Vision Pro and go to the movies too. They aren’t exclusive.

    Quits rate past 23 years.

    One explanation for big layoffs? Quits are down. But when you look: they're down compared to 2022, they're not down compared to 5+ years ago.

    Another explanation? Generative is expensive and companies are laying people off to free up cash to spend on that.

    Vision Pro skeptics: if the hardware was indistinguishable from an ordinary pair of glasses, would that convince you?

    I may be wrong, but I think the current political state of the US Border issue is:

    GOP: The Border is a catastrophe! We must act!

    Administration: How about if we..

    GOP: NO!

    Administration: Perhaps we could..

    GOP: NO!

    Administration: Could we just..

    GOP: NO!

    Anyone used a USB battery pack to power a Raspberry Pi 5? The extra processing would help my robot, but DC power requirements seem heftier.

    Tired of this: "learn C so you can understand how a computer really works."

    So much of modern computers is not visible from C (pipelining, virtual memory, branch prediction, cache misses, etc).

    I guess what they mean is, "you learn about pointers and consecutive memory locations"? How is that helpful for programming in other languages without pointers?

    C teaches you an abstraction of computers based on the PDP-11. It's interesting, but it's not essential.

    GrantMeStrength,
    @GrantMeStrength@hachyderm.io avatar

    @nedbat pffff C? If you can’t enter the binary code for the necessary machine code instructions you can’t possibly understand computers.

    I couldn’t resist this little Sony Walkman, but so far I’m not impressed. Out-of-box-experience: 0/10, software support on Mac: 0/10, user interface on the device itself: -5/10 (yes minus 5). Sound quality is ok. The kicker is that the tape animation - which is what I really wanted 🥸 - doesn’t animate the tape spools, just spins. Sony UX is usually bad, but when combined with Android: wow, just wow. Back it goes to Amazon.

    Cool, an app but as an extra device that you have to keep charged and that you can only use outside when you tether it to your smartphone

    And that does the same thing as your smartphone can already do, just worse

    Cool stuff

    Super cool

    I assume Apple will reveal similar functionality at WWDC. Will Alexa get an upgrade too?

    Can see these being of use particularly to the senior population.
