Independence will be good for Scotland and England. Doing my little bit to push it along.

Voters in Scotland remember this: for Tories and Labour England is the priority and will always come first. Scotland will only ever - ever - get what it needs or wants if it happens to coincide with what England wants. Use your vote wisely.

@Wen odd that: “Among the proposals that survived the cull was Woodcock’s call for “protective buffer zones” around “defence companies and energy providers”. It happens that Woodcock works for lobby groups that represent both arms manufacturers and fossil fuel companies.” Coincidence, I’m sure.

Read the news you're not getting: In England, the only country in the world to have fully privatised water & sewerage systems, raw sewage was discharged into rivers and seas for more than 3.6m hours in 2023. More than double 2022. Meanwhile Scottish Water, publicly owned, has invested nearly 35 per cent more per household in infrastructure since 2002 than the privatised English firms, charging 14 per cent less and not paying out dividends.

Fixed that for you, New Statesman.

Fun fact: England is the only country in the world to have fully privatised its water and sewerage systems.

Via the Financial Times: "Scotland—which has its own state-owned water company—massively outperformed its neighbours with water standards similar to much of Scandinavia."

Indyposterboy,

@Wen @alanferrier As the FT put it “Scotland, which has its own state-owned water company, massively outperformed its neighbours, with water standards similar to much of Scandinavia.” And that with higher investment and no dividends.

Independent Portugal generated the equivalent of 91% of its electricity needs through renewables by March 2024.
It has Europe's lowest power prices.
Non independent Scotland generated the equivalent of 113% of its overall electricity needs through renewables in 2022.
It has the UK's highest power prices.

Since the 2014 'Vow' of more powers Westminster has accelerated the hobbling of Scotland's devolved choices and is now actively overruling what Scottish voters want and have voted for in elections. Increasingly Scotland must use its remaining devolved powers any way it chooses as long as that is the same way that England does.

Meanwhile ‘renewables powerhouse’ Scotland pays the highest electricity bills in the UK, and the highest transmission charges in Europe to feed our power into the ‘national’ grid. Would any other country put up with this rip-off?

With a population only 8.5% of the UK, Scotland produces 40% of the UK’s renewable power.

@simon_brooke @TheNational Not sure I see the point of his railing at a party that by its very philosophy and the breadth of its church is ever going to be as progressive or socialist as he wants when there is already a party closer to his ideal - the Greens. A bit like me demanding the Tories should be more left wing 😉

“INDEPENDENCE supporters risk repeating the lost 2014 referendum due to a lack of understanding about why the Yes campaign failed, it has been warned as a new campaign looks to resolve the issue.”
But we know why it failed: too many people were scared, successfully, by ‘Project Fear’ and the predominantly pro-union media, & particularly by the BBC. As Blair Mcdougall so clearly put it “We’d have struggled to win without the scaremongering.”

It’s only one short step from Westminster Tories* labelling supporters of Scottish independence as ‘extremists’ to officially banning of political support for it. Fortunately for the SNP they appear to have more or less given up on independence to focus on ‘compromise’, so their (dwindling) survival is assured. ☹️
*I expect the New Tories (aka Labour) to adopt the same language very soon as they eagerly chase after the Tories rightward move.

Just a wee reminder that Sunak’s ‘extremist’ Scottish nationalists voted democratically for a second independence referendum. A bigger mandate than Thatcher, Blair, Cameron and Johnson ever had.

Whilst Westminster is very keen to try to eradicate divergent policies in the devolved nations of the UK and get us all to do what England does, it's noticeable that they don't seem to be very eager to enforce the 'best of british' First Past the Post system on Scotland. If they did, the SNP would currently hold something like 80% of the seats in the Scottish Parliament.
