If your vacuum cleaner does not wlhave the power it used to anymore, change those filters. Seriously. Invest the money, change the filters. It's magic.

@vicgrinberg We've got more than one vacuum cleaner, I've got into the habit of using one cleaner to vacuum the filters of the other. Quicker than washing and drying.

Interesting write up here of boardgames taking inspiration from Jane Austen. We actually played Obsession last night with friends and my wife is heavily hinting that she'd like a copy for her birthday...It's a good, but complex game.

Nearly finished reading "Bauhaus Goes West". Fascinating book about all of the various people involved with the German design school who emigrated to Britain and America in the 1930's after the Nazis shut the school down.

What comes out to me is how much Britain & America gained from this influx of creative designers. A lesson for today about the benefits of immigration.

500 miles of Dutch-style cycle tracks built in Britain in the 1930s when cyclists out numbered drivers. What a lost opportunity that this system wasn't maintained and developed further after the 1940s.

Been to Alnwick today to swap a box of kids books for a handful of weightier tomes at Barter Books. We then popped into town to search out a new independent bookshop. What a brilliant find. The Accidental Bookshop is well worth a visit. Article here from its opening in 2022.

@bagpie @Wen have either of you been to the biannual bagpipe festival in the Czech Republic? I went with Sallyport Sword Dancers in 1996 and it was brilliant. Never realised just how many sorts of bagpipes there are.

The pipers who I found most impressive was a band from Galicia which not only played Galician music, but also Scottish Highland pipe tunes just like a very very good Highland pipe band.

The remains of an Iron Age Crannog, dating from around 2,000 years ago, on the foreshore of the Clyde just below the Erskine Bridge, which was opened in 1971. Crannogs consisted of a round house constructed on a manmade island in lochs, marshes or intertidal zones. In this case, a circle.of wooden posts were sunk into the sand and the internal space was filled with rocks abd silt to create the base on which the house was then be built.

@thisismyglasgow my first archaeological excavation was a crannog on North Uist for Ian Armit's (site director) PhD research into Iron Age settlement. Except the crannog turned out to be Neolithic... Brilliant excavation - probably why I ended up working in heritage.

@CloudyMrs Time to change company. It is really tiring the way that insurance companies fleece established customers this way by jacking prices with the hope that you won't have the energy to move your business. This is what I will be doing next month I suspect...

is there an easy way of finding online Scottish suppliers?

Just wasted half an hour getting an order together with a Yorkshire-based firm to find that they do not deliver to the Scottish Borders despite claiming to deliver to Scotland!

EricBranse,
@EricBranse@mastodon.scot avatar

@simonvarwell not the first time that I have experienced it. When we first moved here in 2013 I got a scaffolding tower from a place in York. They would happily deliver to Berwick, but not Duns, despite the distance being effectively the same. I ended up getting it delivered to our old address in Northallerton and collected it with a trailer...

@lauravivanco @yianiris @MadeyeTheCarnaptious yet it goes beyond that. The proposals are very inclusive, stressing that taking Scottish citizenship would be optional, that people could choose to retain British citizenship without loss of rights. Personally, I will be applying for a Scottish passport as soon as I can. Just sorry that this is taking so long and I need to renew my British passport soon.
