The @EDPS missed an Internet meme moment to use the phrase “our incredible journey” when announcing the discontinuation of EU Voice and EU Video. https://ourincrediblejourney.tumblr.com/
Was the experiment really “a successful story” when the outcome was learning no EU agency cared about digital sovereignty enough to lead by example?
GDPR and DSA are great for changing the status quo of social networks.
But to build a better future, governments must fund, support, and use the alternatives.
@Ciantic@EDPS@Gargron Given the EU runs its own websites, I think it's capable of running its own social web profiles too. EDPS reasonably was not the right IT department to do so long term.
I think big community servers should be reserved for individuals and small organizations lacking the expertise/capacity/budget of running their own website, but I agree that any continued social web presence would be better than no presence.
I appreciate leaders of right-wing political parties in Sverige denouncing violence against people attending an anti-fascist meetup.
The politicians and attackers share a dislike of multiculturalism. Note their defense of democracy, not who gets to participate in it. They differ in tactic. It feels like an elitist reply: Why resort to violence when changing public policy is a more civilized way to rid of people you don’t want in society?
KD leader Ebba Busch advocated against multiculturalism. M leader Ulf Kristersson agreed to far-right SD’s proposals to reduce immigration by making asylum, residency, citizenship more difficult. Is that not psychological violence?
The difference between breathing and not breathing is more significant than not allowing someone to breathe the same air as you. I prefer to live with suffering than feel nothing by being dead. But the option to not inflict suffering is there.

51% of the Swedish immigrants who will be forced to leave under a proposed Moderaterna and SD policy will be recent university graduates with the most in-demand skills, according to a study by the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise.
Institutionalizing xenophobia with public policy intended to limit "low-qualified labor migrants" is bad for the economy.
Why can EU companies not use US-based cloud infrastructure and SaaS products?
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act allows the US government to force US companies to share foreign customer data without a warrant or disclosure.
There is no way to reconcile US govt surveillance with the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights on privacy.
The EU fought US govt spying by strengthening privacy rights. The US should fight Chinese govt spying similarly if it actually cares about human rights.
Purism invented true convergence years ahead of Apple, Google, or Microsoft—and those companies still have not accomplished it.
Purism’s PureOS is a truly convergent operating system (OS) which means the same code base runs on our laptop, mini pc, tablet, or phone form factor and adjusts to the screen size and inputs.
@purism I’m an investor and supporter, but this account of history diverges from reality a bit. Windows 10 Phone was previewed in 2014 and released in 2015 with convergence as a feature. It supported an external display, keyboard, mouse. It introduced "universal apps" with responsive UI based on screen size. Microsoft accomplished it and shipped it, but abandoned it when the market didn’t buy it after 2 years of trying. I loved my Lumia 950 and appreciate you carrying the dream forward.
🌍 This Earth Day and every day, we have taken ambitious steps and introduced concrete measures to reduce plastic pollution, including:
🔁 The EU’s Plastics strategy
🚯 The Single-Use Plastics Directive
♲ The Circular Economy Action Plan
🌊 Zero Pollution Action Plan
Last year, we adopted the chemical legislation REACH that restricts microplastics intentionally added to products. It prevents the release of about half a million tonnes of microplastics in the environment.
@EU_Commission That’s all good, but how aggressively are we getting to net zero greenhouse gas emissions and eliminating fossil fuel usage? We’re running out of time.
@relistan I like your idea. Sadly, I don’t have outdoor space of my own. But my friend nearby does. She’ll be away too so she might not mind me taking over her balcony to do this. 🤔
I hadn’t heard about the actually-open-source Terraform fork in awhile and worried it might have fizzled out, but I was delighted to see OpenTofu released a 1.7.0 beta yesterday.
Would be very useful to create a feature in Mastodon which would enable admins of instances to create trusted and exchange relationships for peer blocked domains.
That way I could create a trusted relationship to for example @jerry and @seb and choose to trust their block lists of for example limited servers, or even blocked ones.
That way we would somewhat leverage the Fediverse of selective trusted relationships between instances.
Writing and reviewing blogs all day, but now the sun is shining over #Stockholm, and the weather is supposed to be crap for the rest of the week, so...
