I seen someone refer to current culture war against LGBTQ+ as Section 28 and 3/4. No notes

Last toot aged well, so the SNP have installed an openly homophobic (and seems likely Forced birther) Deputy FM. The press that have been singing Forbes are going to use her to destroy the SNP's progressive credentials and they will not have a defence against it.

Today is my 12 year anniversary working at Mozilla.

Long time to be in the one place, but working on some of the most exciting updates at the moment.

If you are on Nightly and want to test something new, flip browser.urlbar.secondaryActions.featureGate = true to enable, love to hear feedback.

@forteller I did recently fix a bug with open tab search @ https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1797488

The heuristic one is tricky, I didnt work on that but usually only changes when there are strong signals its a change for the good and every single change is going to not work ideally for someone.

Best place for bugs is @ https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

How do people actually transfer things between their phone and computer without saving email drafts?

@dale@toot.cafe avatar

I feel bad for Humza Yousaf, got the job at a difficult time and I havent seen a politician be on the receiving end of more hateful abuse than he has.

But I am glad that there was a line drawn when it comes to people talking about being progressive vs their actual actions.

I would like the SNP to take this chance to address the fact that being a progressive party and having reactionaty hate campaigners represent that party is not sustainable, but not expecting much on that front

One of the reasons I get fustrated about people gatekeeping the fediverse and banning the general public etc, its very hard to see something like Kenmure Street happening on here as things are.

I knew / followed the first people who saw the Kenmure street van, I met them via twitter. I don't think a single person in that group have moved over here.

Had a fun portrait shoot with local musician Ciar Nixon.

Lots of learning on a genre of photography that frankly scares me, but had a lot of fun and some of the shots came out ok.

Go check out Ciars stuff @ https://ciarnixon.bandcamp.com/album/those-we-left-behind, really great acoustic music

@Jeremiah Thanks! Although that compliment is probably more for the model :)

Nothing radicalises me more against the gatekeeping that is quite literally built into software engineering tooling than setting up local developer environments lol I had to do it this week and you better believe a blog post is incoming 😂

dale,
@dale@toot.cafe avatar

@sue Being on the internet means seeing the daily stream of "Nobody wants AI In Firefox bro"

Ok cool so we should rip out the privacy preserving local translation feature then?

I understand that it is a lot of the same people making a lot of the same claims and hard to expect a lot considering how many people fell for crypto / nft stuff. But yeh definitely tiring.

Strange and random request from a friend of mine ... if there is anyone in Edinburgh who can help, please let me know!

And as always, if you're comfortable doing so, boosts for reach would be really welcome.

From Julia Collins ...

========

Edinburgh friends! I'm doing a presentation next week on a psychotherapist called Ronald Fairbairn who was born (and lived) in Edinburgh. His birthplace was 1 Cluny Gardens, Morningside. I wonder if any of you who are travelling that way might be able to get a photo of the house for me? The image on Google streetview is somewhat blurred.

Thanking you in advance!

*Bonus points if anyone can find his grave in Dean Cemetery.

** Bonus points and a bottle of wine to anyone who takes a photo of Fairbairn's grave with a pair of Calvin Klein branded clothing hanging off it with label clearly visible.

lol someone else also sent me this, sounds like a fun litt eproject and would be 100% up for it but I don't think I have the time to make the trip from Glasgow this week my schedule is all filled up sorry. Hope you get covered.

Since I see that a notable VC-famous is now telling us that he wish he'd "stood by" Eich way back, I'd like to tell you a true fact that situation: Eich didn't lose the CEO's job for his (reprehensible) Prop-8 donation.

Everyone wants to believe that's true, because fits nicely into narratives a number of invested camps want to believe, whether it's somebody being ousted for reprehensible views the woke SJW mob somehow pulling down a great leader (tm) but that's not what happened.

dale,
@dale@toot.cafe avatar

@freddy @nadim @mhoye Sorry but I can't remember anyone being called "Mike" working at Mozilla ... :)

dale,
@dale@toot.cafe avatar

@mhoye Yeh definitely, I remember I had 3 Mikes as managers in a row and narrowly avoiding a 4th and thinking something wasn't quite right about that.

Noticed in a lot of the "defederate" conversations a repeated strawman arguments that not advocating for a block was somehow support for Zuckerberg et al.

I 100% agree that bluesky / threads etc are not to be trusted and will try to exploit users and the wider fediverse.

I think defederating is an unweildy hammer and that "Embrace, extend, and extinguish" can (and should) go in the other direction for a change.

@dale@toot.cafe avatar

Where are all the people building useful and fun things on the Fediverse? (that haven't been chased off already).

Audioscrobbling, event trackers, mapping apps etc?

(already follow @dansup but he cant be expected to do everything by himself though)

I am a bit worried about publishing the mobile app source code, specifically the camera logic

There are no existing libraries or examples, that I'm aware of, that do what Loops Camera does

I'm mostly worried about shady clone apps or other uses that violate our license

I think an amicable solution would be to publish the app source, but with a placeholder basic camera while shipping the full camera to App Stores

What do you think?

dale,
@dale@toot.cafe avatar

@dansup Do you use Open Source libraries in the software you build? Often libraries that did not exist until someone published them.

It feels like somewhat against the very spirit of open protocols and collaboration to be considering publishing something like that closed source, pulling the ladder up as it were.

lol this is hilarious, the Proud Boys guy has accidently promoted a buddies band without realising they are a "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" type of skinhead.

Whenever I see a pundit claim you can’t make a good Progressive Web App implying that Apple’s middling support is doing us a favour somehow, I get the urge to go all-in on the Chrome-only Fugu APIs just to show what could have been done in an alternate universe where Mozilla hasn’t given up

dale,
@dale@toot.cafe avatar

@baldur One of the more annoying things is that before giving up we built a lot of amazing web apps. We had to have competitive performance on low end devices and should easily be abe to disprove that (from the performance perspective at least).

Its worth pointing out that I feel (hope) that the opinion is slowly shifting back at Mozilla, and externally large web apps are influencing decisions on standards (like Photoshop on the web etc)

dale, to random
@dale@toot.cafe avatar

The annoying thing about people content warning their thoughts about bike lanes is that I have to open content warnings by default to make this thing usable which means occasionally some stuff that actually should be content warned pops up on the train.
