Rule of odds

1, 3, 5

Don't plant evens
Don't use even number of stones
Don't use even number of fence posts

Odds will look natural.

Look at a lot of pictures.

Less straight lines. Lots of curves. Not flat. Mounds are good. Pathways have corners that reveal something new.

Short bits.

One machine still at Windows 10...

Wake up this morning to it showing something called: EdgeBar - on the desktop right-side.

What a waste! Waste my screen space. Waste my time to get rid of it - because no permanently get rid of it button/setting. NOTE: sidebar is "off" in Edge.

FYI - a few choice words were uttered loudly. I will save your ears.

Here is "removal" option if you want to keep using Windows...

LA Times: California is changing how big power companies charge for electricity. What to expect on your bill..." In an effort to pare high electric bills during the summer heat, the CPUC adopted a utility-backed proposal to impose a flat monthly fee of up to $24.15 on all customers while reducing the charges imposed per kilowatt of electricity used." https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-05-16/california-is-changing-electricity-billing-what-to-expect

At that flat-rare price...probably not cost effective in short term, either.

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@douglasvb @ai6yr

I get the idea of independence and not wanting to support a company.

To do that you have to be financially capable or in it for long term.

For most of us: payoff over 10 or 15 years is an issue as that requires "another longterm loan".

For many that likely won't live in a place more than a couple of years - it's not an option (e.g. employment reasons usually).

This happened to me once at a Superstore

"Customers are fed up with anti-theft measures at stores.

"It seemed like [it took] forever, with people walking by. It was humiliating."

Dennison has found her own solution: She has switched grocery stores. "

https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/theft-grocers-organized-crime-1.7203990

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@MikeImBack

Aahh yes. That 90% should suffer for the 10% bad ... (*replace % values to suit). This is wrong direction.

My solution is: I do not checkout myself. Their employee does. If they accuse me of stealing... then the receipt check will be at the return counter.

Probably the only solution to the claimed organized crime - is to put all products behind a wall and workers "do the pick" and checkout. Service Merchandise did this. Who is Service Merchandise? Exactly!

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@MikeImBack

I've heard that.

I can see a lot of empty self-checkouts where I go. For the folks that have no problem DIY - great.

I do my own gas - but it's not the same comparison... the pump takes care of restricting payment & flow of fuel.

Self-checkout of a myriad of products by humans is ripe for errors - AND the stealing accusations are go-to response. That is not a friendly operation to shopper - it is adversarial.

30+ years in tech... including point of sale -- and I won't use it.

Funny thing is... it is 100% the online model (aka Amazon)...

I hate using them - but there are so many things I cannot get local anymore (at reasonable prices or at all)... example: mower parts.

It works online - but not in brick & mortar.

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@tantramar @MikeImBack

I do my best to support local retail & food (restaurants and groceries). But certain products are not available locally.

But sometimes I have to drive the 10 to 20 miles to box store (1-way)... and that's a drag. But I'm not moving to higher cost area... to reduce that drive.

Shopping online is always my 3rd choice.

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

I finally did it. I used an LLM. A couple of months ago, MS added its Copilot to Windows. I turned it off. But the latest update shoved it back in my face and tried to get me to let it use my data. So I asked it a question: How do I get rid of Copilot? It suggested I uninstall it like any other program, but MS removed that option. But Copilot went on to tell me the exact registry key to change to block it from loading, and now it's gone.
