Love this directive from a publisher's style guide:

Rescue the author from pet phrases or overuse of academic clichés (“seen through the lens,” “shines fresh light on”) and punctuation or stylistic devices that become annoying (overuse of em dashes, italics for emphasis, or “scare” quotes).

I've been absent from this group for a while but I'm back with to share:

  1. Phone call with a friend who completely understands me

  2. Reaching the end of a huge editing project

  3. Someone else made my dinner tonight and it was delicious

You aren’t required to “like” a politician. You are required to evaluate a politician’s policies and record on issues—and decide whether to vote for that politician on those bases. So often we are infantilized into “I like” or don’t when it should be what a pol has done or hasn’t done.

May 20: When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?

Can't say there was a time when I consciously thought this. I have kept a journal for 30 years, had some CNF stories published, wrote a couple nonfiction books... but it's only been in the past few years I accepted the title of "writer."

I've always been an editor first.

5/17 -- Other than writing, what's your go-to creative outlet?

Painting. I enjoy it because it's one thing I don't have to be good at. But that mostly only happens in the winter.

A book I edited was written up in the local paper.

So happy to see Shannon Bohrer's book, Judicial Soup: One Man's Wrongful Conviction and What It Means for Criminal Justice Reform, getting some media attention. This is a very relatable book on a hugely important topic. When you read it, first you'll be angry. Then you'll think, "If it can happen to that guy, it can happen to anyone."

I severely criticize MSNBC for this BS. Who gives a living damn about how painful it must be for an Orange Thug and rapist? THREE WOMEN on air talking about DT. What about the women he raped? Seems to me if anything, that he raped Stormy Daniels. Listen carefully to this video.

UPDATED: My dog got his vision back! I don't fully understand it. Apparently it was not cataracts but a virus that caused his blindness. Vision returned 4 days later. Now he thinks he's invincible.

My sweet doggie finally lost the rest of his sight. He's had cataracts for years, but while we were gone over the weekend, it seems the last bit of vision left him. We're all adjusting. I'm sorry I wasn't with him the first time he woke up and realized he couldn't see.

What a weekend! At times I was so busy I barely had time to think, but it was good too.

  1. My 7 y.o. daughter got over her fear of batting in time to get 5 hits and an RBI in her softball game. The power of the mind is astounding!

  2. My apple muffins turned out delicious, not too sweet or bland, and now I don't have to throw away any apples.

  3. Wrote letters to voters with friends/family last night. Nice to see my brother while doing something I believe in.

You?

Counterpoint to Elle Griffin's article "No On Buys Books.": Yes, People Do Buy Books

The sections "Why It's so Easy to Mislead with Book Statistics" and "How Books Make Money" are well worth your time.

-A rapid strep test plus antibiotics mean my daughter felt well enough to go to school today.
-My new blow dryer is lighter, quieter, and more efficient than the one it replaced.
-We found a $20 replacement for medicine that had been costing $100 a month.

Bonus: I have an interesting editing project from Cornell University Press--an academic work with a feminist twist.

Is there writing advice you used to follow but changed your mind?

When I first drafted my novel, it was all Show and no Tell. "Show, don't tell" is good advice generally, but it needs some qualifiers. Like, "don't tell too much all at once" or "don't tell more than is absolutely needed"

After my alpha reader pointed out that I'd written a screenplay instead of a novel, I realized successful novelists Tell all the time. They just know how to balance it against the Showing

2. Do you keep a journal?

Yes! I've kept a journal since I was 17. I have a large box of filled notebooks in my closet. I don't write every day, but I write regularly. I record mundane things, momentous life events, national news worth noting.

I started it when I was still very aware of my mother's death and not having much to remember her by. So I've always thought of it as something people who outlive me might read and learn something about me.

Apr 3 Do you use semicolons? Correctly?

Yes, I use them occasionally and always correctly. They can be distracting for readers, so I try to limit them.

@edibuddies

I'm such an iconoclast.

Yes, CMoS says there are no spaces on either side of dashes (en, em, hyphen).

BUT.

When a writer has put spaces there, and that writer is consistent in the styling, why do I need to change it "because CMoS says so?" I'm not paid to follow CMoS. I use it as a guide, yes, but . . .

We indies can make our own rules, and one of mine is "pick one and be consistent."

KPED,
@KPED@urbanists.social avatar

@GramrgednAngel @edibuddies

For sure! It all depends on the client. For indies, I flag that and let them know they have a choice. CMOS says no spaces, AP style uses spaces, which do they prefer?

Some clients really want to follow CMOS so they look like a traditionally published book. Others are more flexible or leave it to their editor to decide.

It's easier to have a guide to tell you what to do. The hard part of editing is making decisions.

Another day, another three good things I'm thankful for:

  1. Received an invitation to speak to a group of retired veterans in Washington, DC, interested in learning about writing memoir.

  2. Had a fun time catching up with my fellow Women in Publishing Summit panelists. Our March 6 presentation is going to rock!

  3. Enjoyed some tasty homemade chicken enchiladas for lunch.

    Do you really need a press release for your book? Here's just one reason:

    "If you Google your book title, you will probably notice Amazon and other big retailers first; your publisher and your own website can appear later. Having a press release can boost this rank in search queries."

    1. My daughter came home from school in a better mood than she left in.

    3. I finished judging my category of books for the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards--two weeks early!

    "Still, facts matter. Biden acted responsibly and committed no crime. Trump faces multiple felony counts, including intentionally withholding top-secret documents and obstructing an investigation. Three years separate Biden and Trump in age, but the distance between their mental and emotional fitness remains incalculable — as is the chasm between the media we have and the media democracy requires."
