One major difference between paganism and other major world religions is that we don't believe life is a punishment. We are not born sinful and in need of forgiveness; to live is not to suffer.

Life is a gift, and the opportunity to learn and evolve is a blessing. To be a pagan, you don't have to be anything other than the wonderful, complex animal you are.

That was why it was important to keep our 3 souls in contact & working together, & why we need to make breath prayer when we know we're dying, so that all of our knowledge & experience of this life isn't lost but goes back to the God/dess

Can we talk about burnout and/or boredom in the craft?

It feels like I haven't been expanding myself lately. I spend a good bit of time preparing events for our community every month with three other members. Our paths are all different so we take turns leading the events. I partially started doing this thinking I would find others who follow a similar path to mine and we could do group work together (not as a coven but as a circle).

There comes a time in studying a deity where there's nothing else to learn from historically- you've read all the source material, every text mentioning them, every artifact found, learned correspondences and compared myths.

Connecting with other devotees is the next step- to compare your UPGs and find consensus. Because while we gain inspiration from the ancients, we are here worshipping these gods right now, in this era.

When it comes to walking the pagan path, there are a few hard truths that I have had to accept:

First, is that this is meant to be a life-long learning path. There may be milestones you reach, and a day you’re confident in your practice, but there is no end goal of this road besides death, so appreciate the journey.

Second, one cannot plan out a learning path in its entirety. You might settle on one branch of paganism, but that's not permanent. Life will get in the way, you will evolve, and priorities and faiths will change. It is not a program or a school- the road is winding.

Lastly, is that once you bring the gods into your life, it will not be the same. Godly aid causes Godly disturbance, like ripples in a pond.

The windings & regeneration are why I decided not to try to teach, but to mentor instead. I teach a set of foundational practices & philosophies, takes 6 hours at most. After that it's "choose your own adventure" & I'll help as needed along the way.

Hey my darling witches, as you know the 21st is Thursday. So if you own an old house like we do, don't forget to leave out a bowl of oatmeal with a pat of butter on top for your Nisse, Tomte house gnome. A little dark shadow that darts around in the background and helps you find your house keys and calms your pets when the storms are bad. Leave a bowl of oatmeal out for them to show that you appreciate their assistance. I've been leaving out a bowl of oatmeal ever since we bought this house and this past year I have seen those little shadows and those tiny hands peeking out from underneath entertainment center's darting behind the fridge. I know I've got one and I'm going to leave them some oatmeal this year. Like I do every year. You leave out a bowl of oatmeal on the winter solstice to show them that you appreciate their help. It's also said that if you don't do that they get spicy on you and you don't want a spicy gnome.

I got so burned on my last new book read with surprise assault (someone framed it as "consent issues", no Hunny if she's completely drunk - especially if she did not know she was drinking cuz someone was spiking her drink - and he's stone cold sober that's assault, anyway) that I'm hesitant to read something new.

This is when I get stuck in a cycle of reresds and rewatches because it's so difficult to trust.

It sucks, and triggers my anxiety and feelings of being unsafe in the world :/

I think that's a large part of why I read gen fanfic & mostly stopped reading commercially published fiction. Aside from the free reign & highly imaginative plots, fanfic has content warnings. I can decide whether I want to read this & prepare myself for it if I do.

What are your winter holiday traditions?

We go out as a family, gather holly, pinecones, and berries and put them onto a large wooden tray with lights instead of putting up a tree. We've done this since the kids were young. We have so much fun going out together to collect, then coming home for hot drinks.

My group and I put on a huge celebration.

We have a potluck, light a 12 days wheel, burn a Yule log, and do some serious drumming and give warmth and energy to the light.

From Samhainn to Yule is the 'time of the dead', when I retreat, reconnect with heritage & roots, listen to music & read stories that have meaning. On Yule eve (the Long Night), we open the door at sunset until bedtime & light a candle that will stay lit all night. We give gifts of clothes so we have something new to wear on Yule day.
We do put up a holiday tree in blues & silver for winter.
