It is getting harder and harder to use Facebook as a developer.

I use it for Single Sign On for https://OpenBenches.org - because I don't want to handle usernames & passwords.

Now it is demanding that I create a "business portfolio" to continue.

(Don't come at me with "delete Facebook" unless you can show me how to do OAuth with every Fediverse server in PHP.)

We need a word for real-life enshittification caused by online culture. Like being unable to find an organisation’s info because they’ve Instagram but no website. Or panicked people being sent a videolink to download to their phone when they ring for an ambulance. Or being excluded from residents' association news if you're not on Facebook. Or having cash payment refused. Or staff in the business you’re physically standing in telling you to find the answer to your question on their website.

TIL that you can mark files for #Dropbox to ignore with xattr -w com.dropbox.ignored 1 <filename> (on mac, other OSs at https://help.dropbox.com/sync/ignored-files )

So handy for small rust and node scripts to be able to exclude target and node_modules without extra faff.

(no, I don't store anything secure in Dropbox, and anything open goes to github, but for simple things I like just storing them on Dropbox)

It's funny how the word "mild" has the same meaning but opposite connotations depending on where you live.

As a kid in Aus, "next week is going to be mild" meant "it's not going to be too hot". But in the UK, when I tell my kids the same thing, it means "it's going to be quite warm and nice".

It's interesting how, as someone who runs a developer training business, revenues tend to move in line with hiring. It suggests that training's mostly offered to new starters.

There's an assumption that "Oh, our senior developers already know this stuff". Do they, though?

What I see often is training and coaching in foundational skills being undone by continued exposure to "senior developers" who don't have these skills (or don't use them on a day-to-day basis) setting a different example.
