Scribbling thoughts about on the train - I have a half-formed article in my head that I really need to write. So hard to find the time and head space!

You know the phenomenon: that nephew you only see every year or two, who is suddenly grown up and covered in teenage acne.
Since last year, I have visited Facebook less and less frequently. I don’t know if people who visit it every day can see just how rapidly and violently it’s enshittifying, but wow
I can.

My Facebook survival mechanism is to "favourite" critical folks - mostly family. Then you can navigate to a "favourites feed" which shows just those people, completely, in chronological order.

Sometimes I browse the main feed, but not regularly.

I do miss things - like I found a friend is visiting England and I had no idea as they aren't on the favourites list. But if it's important, people can message me.

That "smart lighting" from Philips is about to spy on you in new ways you can't control -- naturally the company is claiming it's to protect you. This is Trump-level lying.

So glad I got an LIFX bulb, where even if their central service goes down*, I know the LAN protocol has been documented: https://lan.developer.lifx.com/docs
(* definitely possible as the company almost went under and got purchased last year)

Rebuilding my laptop - why on earth does OSX sleep a running laptop even when it is plugged in and running? I know it saves power, but it should be a lot easier to say "no, I'm downloading a huge pile of stuff, don't sleep!"

(I did find the setting to change this but it's quite hidden)

Finally set up a small home server (from a refurbished Mini-PC). Running a Debian, I already have paperless-ngx and piHole installed. What made your life easier, what should I look into?

Minecraft server via https://hub.docker.com/r/itzg/minecraft-bedrock-server - but that's because keeping my 6 year old entertained is a critical thing for making my life easier!

I want to talk about "everyone feels like that" and how that narrative can be harmful. It's up there with "it's nothing to get so worked up over"

I spent a lot of my childhood being told that I was overreacting to things, that "everybody feels like that" only no, because I was feeling it and my feelings were valid. But I didn't know that. The everyone feels that way narrative just made me feel like I couldn't handle things...

My 6 year old bashed his knees the other week and then had a big slowly healing scab which itched.

So the other night he came into our bed at 3am (as often happens) but wriggled and twitched and couldn't sleep, as he had this agonising itch.

My instinct was to get annoyed - but I managed to not get annoyed at him but to offer sympathy, as I knew that even though "everyone feels like that" he really couldn't control the (over) reaction.

Obligatory "I'm still here but barely" post - between job-changing (yes, leaving after 12 years!) and parenting, I haven't had the time for much social media.

I'm also finding that a lot of my social stuff has moved to or - not sure if this is a wider change or just my circles?

Oh, and some of my social is on as now I need to find a new job - anyone with senior/principal jobs, UK hybrid or remote, I'm at https://www.linkedin.com/in/korny :-)

Since I've seen a lot of chatter about people switching to as Google ramps up the enshitification of , let me tell you about a killer feature for people who (a) need multiple accounts on the same websites (eg. devs) or specifically (b) have to use multiple Google accounts.

Firefox has an official addon called Multi Account Containers that lets you trivially set up color coded tabs that have separate sets of cookies. Log into your dev account in one, and your test account in another. Log into your personal in one and have another tab next to it with your work Gmail. I'm actually not signed in to any Google accounts in most my tabs, I just have containers for the specific tasks I do on Google products.

It'll take you 30 seconds to set up.

Add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Mozilla's explanation: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/containers

I use this all the time - I have three Google accounts (work, client and private) all with their own tabs and cookies; I have Facebook tamed in its own little jail - it's marvellous.

I pushed a minor tweak to the code explorer - now you can configure thicker coloured borders for top level directories to make nesting clearer. https://polyglot.korny.info (yes, very occasionally I find time for small bits of side code! Only 7 months since the last one...)
