Totally. But I want a third row:
Work 8am - 4pm
Boss: "Why are you leaving early? Aren't you a dedicated worker? We are planning an end-of-day catch up at 6pm, and then pub. What do you mean, you want to make dinner for your kids?"

There are so few scenarios where a date picker calendar is the right thing to use to select a date and so many products where they use it anyways.

Once again, no I don’t want to navigate month by month to reach my birth day, month and year.

If there was such a thing as life insurance for software products and systems, what factors might affect your premiums? What factors might make it difficult to get insured at all?

Personally, I'd look at the team (size, composition, autonomy) and the feedback loops (immediacy, directness etc).

Framework lock-in? Can you survive if a core framework gets enshittified and has impossible fees for future releases - or even just does an Angular and forces you into a massive rewrite for continued support.

The white house has now released their Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence!

Here is the link, I'm going to go through some of the key points and note them in a thread here as I read if you want the tl;dr

Do they define "AI"? The industry doesn't seem to distinguish between 2020 era machine learning, and the current LLM and image generation stuff. Would anything generated through machine learning need labeling too?

Korny,
@Korny@hachyderm.io avatar

@minxdragon
It's going to be a blurry line in many areas too. I was playing with Copilot today, got it to generate a 10 line function that was pretty obvious (but saved me some typing and googling!) - technically this is AI generated code now.

The reason I'm not watching films atm is that they are all 2.5 to 3.5 hours long.

I don't think the problem is my attention span. I'm gonna blame their slack editing. I miss a fun 86 minute film.

The worst thing about online learning is that everything has become a video. Every code tutorial. Every design tutorial. Nobody actually writes out a guide anymore.

It's just "hey guys welcome to my tutorial" and watching 10 minutes of content that mostly isn't relevant...

@Daojoan
I hate this so much ... argh ... flames on the sides of my face ...

Videos

  • can't be listened to when sitting watching your kids watching Sarah and Duck or in any shared setting without headphones
  • can't be skimmed in a useful way - I want to jump to the end and find out who the murderer is!
  • can't be searched for actually useful content
  • you can't copy text or images or especially source code out!

Talk to me about organisations/institutions with their own instances… the variety of models (eg from corporate-accounts only to full, moderated institutional social network)and how those interact with the original scope/ethos of the organisation.

I’m looking at this as a officer. You can imagine a instance as just a single, self-hosted corporate account right through to one on which all members are welcome, or even encouraged to set up an account…

Korny,
@Korny@hachyderm.io avatar

@drandrewv2
has had a corporate instance for years, with SSO access for all employees - it's fairly popular there, though not particularly linked to the internal social networking. https://toot.thoughtworks.com/about /cc @thoughtworks

CEOs thinking of acquiring a biz for its outstanding software dev capability should consider the possibility their organisation will "manage" that out of them. Like buying vegetables for nutritional value, then throwing them into the boiling pot that is their company's culture.

I had several friends who worked for companies absorbed by Computer Associates in Melbourne back in the day, and in their case it seemed a deliberate strategy - acquire a business that had a big customer base but wasn't doing all that well - and then slowly drive it into the ground, providing just enough support and slow improvements so that they could keep milking existing customers for a decade or two, while spending as little money as possible.

I remember reading an article recently about how early 2000 is the end of human creativity.
The article was referring to the movie industry specifically, however I recall when I read it I felt it's for all media...

Shame I couldn't find it now.

Really, nobody writes good articles about how we are in terminal decline as a species any more. The best articles about our inevitable descent into mediocrity were written before 2010, nobody has the skill to write them any more.

For us it's mostly child related things where we both need to know what is going on - school notices are a good example. Also just anything that needs organising - tradespeople, bills, holiday tickets - lots of things.

And sadly vast numbers of people don't ever "reply to all" so a joint alias is critical. We have a Google group, but it's not perfect as it is hard to set it as a "from" address, so people end up replying to individuals not the couple email.

Catch up on the Snowy Hydro 2.0 debacle on Four Corners “Tunnel Vision” this Monday. Originally set to meet its 2024 deadline and budgeted at $2 billion, the project now eyes 2030 completion and costs looking to tally up to $12 billion. Reporter Angus Grigg investigates the reasons behind the delay and increased costs, including issues with the tunnel boring machine, Florence. Remember, even the biggest projects can run into hiccups! Let's hope they don't get tunnel vision in solving these problems. https://abctv.com.au/2023/10/23/amazing-four-corners.html

I've been wondering a lot about aging in software development.

Any > 40-year old developers out there that'd like to share their perspective?

How did you grow (technically, managing, etc...)? Picked up fields over others (embeded systems over web app, for instance)?

Would love to connect!

Boost for reach please 🙏

@remi
Seems like a huge, and somewhat vague, question...

I'm a dev in my 50s - I think I've mainly grown by keeping hands-on, keeping changing, always learning new things while applying general principles I've learned from the past. And being willing to throw away those principles when they get out of date.

Despite some unhappiness with the state of Labour, it's so good to see the Tories getting wiped out in the by-elections.

But - it feels like these charts miss a huge factor, the actual voter turnout. It'd be nice to have something like a sankey diagram or something for this?

I guess there's no way to be sure who are new voters and who changed their vote, so it wouldn't be straightforward. But there has to be a better option than this:

Mid Bedfordshire election result chart showing Con dropping from 60% to 23%, Labour going from 21.7 to 34.1, Lib Dem going from 12.6 to 23.1
