As the weather gets nicer I'm thinking about getting out on the #Kayak again.
I'd like to log my paddles, in the past I used my banglejs to record GPS position but it's not working anymore.
There are many cheap GPS trackers available but they all seem to use a sim card to report location on demand, where I want to log to SD or something and get the data out later.
Has anyone got any suggestions?
It's a long standing expectation that we don't talk politics or religion "on the air" in amateur radio.
But, we're not "on the air" when we use mastodon.radio.
And we have content warnings which are well established on the fediverse.
I'm proposing we update the rules of mastodon.radio to clarify that:
Political, religious, and similar discussions are allowed but must be behind a content warning, e.g. "UK politics" or "religion Christian".
During the cold war, #hamradio could communicate across the iron curtain. We did well to leave the battle of the systems out of our East-West conversations. The ITU RR still restrict content of international hamradio conversations.
But there are no rules in force banning politics from national hamradio traffic, not in Germany.
Good!
I occasionally mention climate, human rights, and such on our waves. I will challenge right-wing extremist utterances I witness.
@k5dru@dl2jml yeah, I'm thinking something that just hangs the response would slow things down just as effectively without burning through data transfer.
Over a month ago I promised a blog on my Heat Pump and Solar Panels and Battery Storage.
I've finally hit "publish" (well, actually "rsync" but whatever)
It may, or may not, answer any/all questions you have about this. If not, maybe ask me here and I'll try to reply and forget to include that in a future update.
@M0YNG Solcast has been a bid odd recently. Sometime I see the daily forecast be less than my morning forecast for the front panels. I have not looked at forecast.solar. I will have to take a look.
The conversation basically was "we have a lot of members, a lot of skills, and we already deliver training. Can we deliver exams for cheaper than RSGB do (dump Testreach???)"
Considering the harm that so-called "ai" can/does cause, the environmental impact, exploitation of artists and their work, blatant disregard of copyright, degradation of the quality and value of real art and writing, etc. I'm considering adding a restriction to it's use on .radio.
What do you think about a rule saying:
The use of "ai"/LLM generated images, text, code, etc. is strongly discouraged. It must not be used in a way that pretends to be the work of a real human.
@M0YNG It could be difficult to enforce, but yes. I’ve used it for code assistance (not much; it’s generally rubbish), as a different search tool, and to generate “art” where I have no discernible talent… but I’ve come round to agree with your rationale.
@philpem I suspected terrorists t wasn't a simple job. Got a heat pump that has it's own mini consumer unit and want to monitor the power it uses.
In theory this would be easier? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CGTXLX2M
(I'm super annoyed that the battery powered clamp that tx-ed 433 got left behind in a house move)
@M0YNG Not really, your main issue is that adding a new circuit (to power the current meter) is notifiable work and needs to be done by an electrician. Adding a spur from an existing circuit isn't.
Also putting that on the DIN rail in the consumer unit might be dicey (regarding the consumer unit's safety certification)... You probably need to talk to an electrician
It's 1°c and I'm cycling.
"You must be freezing on that!" someone comments.
Not really, I've got a hoodie, and a snood covering my face, and a coat, and gloves, and a helmet with ear flaps.
In a car I'd have to stand outside scraping ice off it, waiting for the fan to clear the inside, then sit still in the cold metal box with my breath fogging on the screen again, and panicking when I accidentally use screen wash that freezes on contact, and the heater never gets warm anyway :alex_crazy:
@M0YNG You’re inspiring me to start running again (Couch to 5K, third season) - I’ve been putting it off until it gets a bit warmer. I detest cold weather… I have most of the warm-ish clothing, except a snood: would you recommend any particular make/type/features? Just looked on Amazon and There Are A Bazillion Options.
