Reprinted and back in stock on our website: STUPID GUY GOES TO INDIA, an autobiographical manga chronicling the adventures of Yukichi Yamamatsu, whose missionary zeal for spreading manga culture inspired him to leave Japan for the first time at the age of 56 to move to Delhi, without knowing any English or Hindi, and try to start a publishing company. Hilarious hi-jinks ensue!

I just deleted a post about how edu.us was $5 bc when I went to buy it on godaddy it said it wasnt available... but looking at the whois record, it looks like it was expired, and they just saw I was interested in it and held the registration so I would have to pay a $70 broker fee. That is shady as hell.

whois record for edu.us Domain: edu.us Registrar: .us Registry Services LLC Registered On: 2002-04-18 Expires On: 2024-04-17 Updated On: 2023-06-02 Status: clientTransferProhibited clientDeleteProhibited clientUpdateProhibited inactive autoRenewPeriod
edu.us is taken. we still might be able to get it for you. broker service fee $69.99

@jonny .edu shouldn't exist in it's current form anyway (e.g. limited only to US institutions).
Also, Godaddy sucks.

Story idea: Reverse Hansel and Gretel about a witch who is tormented by weird little cat-lizard-goblin children who keep trying to climb into her "lovely warm oven." All she wants to do is bake gingerbread and these dang children keep almost injuring themselves because they're too foolish to understand what an oven is and that you shouldn't try to sleep in one.

Not gonna lie, this is probably one of the best things I've ever made for a presentation.

The genre of the month for March for Book Club for Masochists: A Readers' Advisory Podcast is not a genre, but a format!

This month we're reading Non-Fiction Graphic Novels and Comics! (Yes, manga counts too.)

What are your favourites? What do you like about them? What do you recommend?

Huh TIL Library of Congress maintains an authoritative linked data representation of all the states, so the "official" way to refer to "Ohio" is https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/countries/ohu

But also each state is actually a "Country," who has a broader authority of the same type of "United States." It also is a skos "Concept" and the United States is a "Broader" concept. That seems to be inherited from the way that MARC handles location/authority, filtere through imperfections in SKOS, resulting in the MADS vocabulary. some interesting background here: https://www.loc.gov/standards/mads/rdf/index.html#t12

#LinkedData is just a big stack of history that only ever makes sense if you consider it in context with literally every metadata that has every happened

MidniteLibrary,
@MidniteLibrary@glammr.us avatar

@jonny That list of "countries" is interesting as it also includes Canadian provinces and territories, Australian states and territories, places like Scotland, and the truly baffling "Paracel Islands]" (yes the "]" is part of the name in that list. https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/countries/pf.html

Ugh, just spent like the last hour trying to track down some obscure comic thing because someone just made up a character and got them listed on Wikipedia.

I still want to design a keyboard with dual numpads. But bigger keyboards are always harder to design, and that's possibly so big that I can't easily make it single-PCB and definitely can't 3D print a case

MidniteLibrary,
@MidniteLibrary@glammr.us avatar

@jsr @foone For true weirdness you could have both types of numpads. One in the phone-style with 1-2-3 as the top row and one in keyboard-style with 7-8-9 as the top row.

Sure do love all the websites that hide text unless I click "see more." Like, I know the text is on the page somewhere because if I do a ctrl F it tells me, but I'm going to have to click multiple things to find it. I'm looking at you GoodReads.

So at some point OSF decided one of my projects was "spam," made it private, and never notified me.

This was a poster presentation called "Breaking Bridges and Destroying Trust: How communities are harmed when libraries protect hate speech" from the Ontario Library Association conference in 2020.

It was about public libraries accepting transphobic speakers into their spaces and the ensuing damage it did to relationships with LGBTQ2+ communities.

I am very unimpressed with OSF right now.

Dangit Mastodon, I don't need a separate notification every time someone likes a post. Just give me one notification with all the likes.

MidniteLibrary,
@MidniteLibrary@glammr.us avatar

@jonny It means that if any of my posts becomes even slightly popular the notification section just becomes useless as I scroll pass dozens of notifications for each person who liked the post.

Apparently this sound is happening in our hallway today. Part of me is glad I chose to wfh, part of me wants to go in and bathe in the vwhhOAMMM, and a third part of me is like "this building constantly falling apart is a symptom of the absence of a faculty union as a counterweight to administrative bloat, where an always-increasing fraction of university funds go towards its byzantine bureaucracy rather than maintenance bc there is nobody with the structural power to say 'no'"

nothing really going on in the video aside from the sound - its just a very standard looking academic hallway with mismatched tiling, disorderly posters pinned to a board that cant be read, upside down trashcans that have recently been emptied and had their bags changed, and a wooden door. the thing making the noise is not in the frame.

@jonny When I was in Las Vegas the air conditioning in the university was often so high that people had space heaters in their offices that they used when it was over 100f outside.
