Solid strategic podcast advice: Be very careful and deliberate about changing your show's name, branding, and focus as to not alienate your current followers.

Solid strategic podcast advisor on his own show: Fuck it. Imma change the name, the artwork, and even the focus right now without any warning. They'll live!

@evoterra you really did it! Wow!

Fun at Vertigo, at the Powerhouse. Food while your legs dangle over the rather big drop; then a jump off the top of the roof! The jump was terrifying.

A view of the side of the Brisbane Powerhouse, a tall brick building, with the tables suspended over the side on the top.

@james Interesting concept but not sure I'd sign up for that. How was the food?

There was a kind of fascianting Reddit thread about a company whose CTO required all engineering leaders to do one small, simple, junior developer appropriate task that week. https://www.reddit.com/r/ExperiencedDevs/comments/1b89gqf/the_cto_of_my_company_challenged_all_engineering/

On some level, it's just a modern version of requiring managers to spend some time working on the line, so it's not that new an idea. However, what really fascinated me was differences in opinions about WHY you would do this, especially from Very Serious Management types.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@rdonoghue I'm in a different field but I'm lucky to have a manager that has a decent understanding of what I do and the pain points of doing it. He doesn't know every little detail, and lets me carve my own path, but he knows that when he asks for something new, or something more, it will disrupt my flow... and he's receptive to suggestions toward streamlining that flow to enable me to do the work.

Flipside, he also knows enough to demand more and reject attempts to pass the buck.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@rdonoghue I might get less leeway if I didn't have a highly specialized skill set. It's a privilege to be reasonably good at what I do, and know that very few others know how to do it. And also my specialization is largely unpaved, so there's a lot of "we've never done that, but let's figure out how to tackle this." Which I guess is a big part of the specialization.

Watching a starfield critique. What parameters would you need to roll on a random table to automatically generate a planet in a space game with every roll meaning something to give you a fun and interesting experience? Has it been done?

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@drevrpg let's see, if I were doing it, I'd want... type (desert, ice, etc), industrialization level, population, danger level, major faction (if applicable), and maybe one more for an interesting twist.

That would get me enough prompts to clearly picture the planet in my head, and then I can make up the rest.

February 29th, , is the official birthday of Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent.

It was first designated as his birthday in issue 164 of World's Finest Comics in 1966. (The linked article does not include this fact, for some reason.)

It is also the birthday of , the secret identity of his fellow superhero, (aka in the ).

I've been re-reading Fourth Edition D&D books, because I've been flipping through every book I have to cross reference lore and get ideas for the campaign I'm writing up.

Fourth Edition listed tactics with every monster. Perhaps not so thoughtfully detailed as The Monsters Know What They're Doing by @KeithAmmann but still, suggested tactics are RIGHT THERE in the monster listing.

5e and Pathfinder 2e could really learn something from the system they shun.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@squishymage42 @KeithAmmann say what you will, 4e was well designed and well written, at least in the early days. They definitely released way too many books (I should know, I bought all of them, on my limited budget, until the wheels fell off the bus and I pulled out), but the system worked and self-regulated in a way that 3e and (to a lesser extent) 5e did not.

The combat sessions dragged though.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@squishymage42 @KeithAmmann we had a weekly game and the combat frequently took up most of our 6+ hour sessions. And occasionally spilled over to the next session.

Part of that, though, was that turns took forever and my players had short attention spans, so there was an overhead tax of "let me take in everything for the first time again and review my options," with the start of everyone's turns. 😓

Where did I find time for weekly 6 hour sessions? Wow!!!

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@squishymage42 @KeithAmmann also 💜 Eberron. 👍👍👍

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@squishymage42 the choice paralysis and agonizing combat is part of why I have mostly moved onto more freeform games (PbtA and FitD mostly), though it's mostly theoretical now as I don't have time or energy to actually play after work and family obligations are done. 🤷

I think 4e worsened the choice paralysis by explicitly leaning into the tactical gaming elements, but it did them soooo well!

Greetings! I'm Evo, no longer on my own single-instance server, which seemed like a good idea but, franky... I can't be bothered. That, and I'm already paying to run Podvibes, so...

Here's my latest #introduction which tells you want to expect from following me here on the Fediverse, in a handy🧵:

One of the things I really miss from the Pixel - spam call protection. Apple appears to have none. I’ve answered more spam calls in the past week than I’ve answered in the past year on Android.

@james the spam filtering on my pixel is very hit or miss. It's better than nothing though.

Remember when taking a plane to anywhere was a simple process? Now, you get to nickel-and-dime every "upgrade", take at least twice as long to get on/off the plane, and risk your health by sitting next to other potentially sick passengers who refuse to wear a mask. Who knew vacationing could be so stressful?

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@lovecrafttapes last time I flew was before Covid and I ended up sick as a dog for my entire vacation. Ugh.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@lovecrafttapes i was pretty down on flying before that, so just one more reason I'd rather pull out my fingernails than get on a plane these days.

It’s my nephew’s 32nd birthday today. That doesn’t feel like it can possibly be right, he’s a child still. Yes he’s been a primary teacher for a decade, but he’s still only a kid.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@BethanyBlack back when I used to work in video stores, a couple decades ago, I used to have to figure out how old people were by their birth years. It still baffles me occasionally that people born in the mid 90s aren't children anymore. Where did the time go?

MrF,

My sister, who is a teacher, just discovered that a statement of opinion from a one Dr Henry Valdez, a professor at Mistakonic University, is present in the teaching materials that third-party content writers provided to her and all her other co-workers. It's presented as a real place, with real students.

She discovered it after a student of hers cited the source in an assignment. None of her co-teachers or her principal knew it was there, or even what it is.

InSpectre, to random

Real talk: it can be very disappointing to see how low download numbers are for a show you've put everything into. That being said, I have zero intention to stop making InSpectre, it's my creative outlet and I've had a story planned out than I plan to see through to the end

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@ITradedMyEyes @InSpectre I'm often jealous of AD creators and their involvement in every aspect of the
production (as opposed to my involvement as a VA in a sort of "drop in" capacity), but I don't envy the need to promote and the sometimes disappointing prospect of seeing public response not be where you wish it was or where it should be.

Lots of respect to you all for that.
