Ya boy is up for an for my in @spicynigel's Among the Stacks under the Best New Guest category! Woo! Voting is open now!

https://audioverseawards.net/vote/

Vote for... well, vote for whomever you want. There's pretty much zero chance I win this thing and a lot of talented names up for the same award, including some of my castmates. If you vote, vote who you like. If it's me, well, thanks. 😀

My goodness, I'm looking at the list of other finalists in my category and... wow! Some huge names.

AH! This is my first time getting to post a Nebula Eligibility post! My main hope is that people will consider my novelette “Dev Fielding and the Call of the In Between,” which was published for the first time this year in my short story collection The Strange Garden and Other Weird Tales.

Also out this year:
"Steve Goes Home" and "The Good and Benevolent Reign of Big Ted" in my collection from @StrongBranchPro

"The Small God of West 54th St." in @translunartl

@alexyquest that's awesome Alex! Congrats and best of luck!

I thought that the most recent XKCD could be generalized into a meme for any situation where your expert knowledge has made certainty of basic facts impossible. So I created a blank version of the comic for your use.

As an example, I've included a far-too-specific comic detailing what I deal with in my day job as a law librarian.

[ [Ponytail is talking to Cueball.] Ponytail: [blank word balloon] Cueball: Okay. Ponytail: [blank word balloon] Cueball: Mhmm. Ponytail: How would you calculate how [blank word balloon] [The comic splits into two paths, each with a caption at the top.] [Path 1, upper right panel] Caption: Normal person: Cueball: [blank word balloon] [Path 2, lower right panel] Caption: Anyone who's worked [blank caption] [Cueball has his arms raised.] Cueball: It is impossible to know and a sin to ask!

For today's I'm calling out some fully finished classics.

  • Wolf 359 is a sometimes-comedy sometimes-drama set in an isolated listening station deep in space.

  • Ars Paradoxica is a decades spanning time-travel epic with a female lead.

Both are great, check it out!

today and I want to highlight:

  • Apollyon, a futuristic tale of contagion, family, and drastic measures.

  • Starfall, a fantasy adventure following a travelling troupe of magical performers.

@james I've never resurrected an old Mac-anything but I'm sure it will probably get better as you locate the right drivers, right?

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@james actually it's been a while since I've done this but my recollection is finding the right drivers is the hardest part. I would have hoped that got better over time but I guess not?

I still have absolutely no idea how to handle the check at the end of a date.

If I offer to pay, he might think I'm a confident, modern woman, but he also might look at me like I just tried to emasculate him with the butter knife. If I don't offer to pay, he may enjoy feeling like a classic gentleman or he may silently seethe with resentment that I'm treating him like a meal ticket.

I make my own money. I can afford a plate of lasagna. I'm just awkward, damn!

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@LucyWinter came here to say if he's uncomfortable by you paying that's his problem, but it's already been said. Also, looking back on my dating life before I got married, and despite not having a problem with my date paying in theory, I still ended up being expected to pay 97% of the time... and on the rare occasion my date wanted to pay, I wasn't threatened, I was...

confused? Did I do something wrong? Is she a modern woman or is she signalling that I've displeased the first date gods somehow?

Ah I don't miss those days.

MrF,

@LucyWinter oh that happened a few times. Was cute. I ended up paying but appreciated the offer.

I’ve been thinking about the idea @Yora had a little few days ago. (Basically, but with general worldbuilding rather than a dungeon). I generally don’t feel able to do these daily challenges, but I think this one could work well for me. Currently debating if I would want to organize my thoughts by covering a single subject each week, or if I should just go where my whims take me

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@bwebster @Yora I did that, sort of, for the first half of the year and hoo boy was it tough. I ended up giving up at the halfway point because a) it was getting harder and harder to come up with an original idea that wasn't a rehash of something else, and b) the time it took to come up with something started getting out of hand. And that's even after I stopped making maps and the like a couple months in.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@bwebster I tried to do one distinct entry per day: usually a faction or location.

It turned out well, just got tough after 6 months.

So the big rumor is that Pedro Pascal is up for the part of Reed Richards in the MCU's upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Interesting, very interesting...

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@Tim_Eagon I like Pascal but I'm having a hard time envisioning him as Reed. Mostly because I'm hoping for the stretchy/gummy working superhero Reed Richards, moreso than emeritus genius superhero consultant RR, or Illuminati RR. That stretchy effect, and the exuberance that I want to see from RR as he fights the bad guys, is going to be hard to pull off convincingly, and I can't visualize Pascal with that kind of physicality.

That said, Pascal can act the **** out of any role, so who knows. He would probably surprise me. I had similar qualms about Craig as Bond and he knocked it out of the park.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@Tim_Eagon I don't remember much of the Krasinski cameo aside from him sitting in the chair. I agree, the powers are goofy AF. I want them to embrace that.

I don't think we're going to see villain-of-the-week, young superhero team F4. I think they'll have their movie adventure/origin story and then slide into a consultation cameo role aside from the very occasional solo movie adventure, a la Dr. Strange. I wanted similar adventuring from him but I guess he's too powerful so they just let his adventures happen off-screen.

Actually, this might be a problem I have with the comic book movie format, I guess. We never see the villain of the week, typical day in the life stories. Look at Spider-Man: we never get to see him just doing his thing. There's no space for that in a movie. It has to be a Big Event to justify the film. "Spider-Man Saves The World. A Fifth Time." Never "Spider-Man Fights Elongated Man for a Bit in Midtown Then Gets a Gyro."

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@Tim_Eagon this is why I like the TV show format, despite all its problems.

@factolvictor @Tim_Eagon I've become more active on BlueSky lately and I have to say, it really depends on what segment of the whole you're tuned into.

I see virtually nothing from the community on BlueSky (aside from @evilhat posts, for the most part, which I love), but on here it's lively.

On the flip side, I see very little discussion from creators here, but on BlueSky it's really hopping.

Unfortunately I'm also seeing some bleed-through of the old Twitter toxicity on there as well...

@factolvictor @Tim_Eagon

Keeping in mind I'm on an audiodrama creator instance here, so that's really saying something. But there's been some movement on this front and I expect this instance, and Mastodon in general, is going to pick up soon re: audiodrama creators.

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@Tim_Eagon mostly just that new ownership of the instance, by someone who is experienced in promotion and building hype, means, possibly, more enthusiastic promotion of the instance than the previous owner and I had the bandwidth to push. I'm so busy I didn't have time to promote this instance.

So mostly I just meant that hopefully this AD community will be more active going forward. Maybe.

Anyone know anything about bookshop.org's affiliate link program? For years people have asked me to do a book review thing. I'd need to monetize to make it worth losing time elsewhere, but felt weird doing amazon affiliate links?

MrF,
@MrF@podvibes.co avatar

@ZachWeinersmith I looked into it briefly a year or two ago, so I don't know how accurate or up to date my understanding is, I may have misread something or they may have changed their policies. My understanding is they're ostensibly only for legitimate book stores. They had something that operates like an affiliate link, and I have seen people use it as such, but my recollection is it involved representing that you are an actual bookstore. No idea if they enforce/verify it. No idea if it was even true, or if so whether it remains true, or what. Maybe someone will come along and say that's wrong.
